Parking Lot: 42.699348, -73.153506 (Do not park at the Greylock Community Club!) YOU MUST WALK ALONG THE SIDEWALK TO REACH TRAIL INTERSECTION. The grassy area looks like it will connect to the trail, but dead ends on private property.
Trail intersection: 42.699967, -73.155807 (DO NOT park in the Holy Family parking lot adjacent to the AT. It is private property and non-residents will be towed.)
|
From Williamstown take MA 2 east to North Adams. The trail crosses MA 2 (Main Street) at Phelps Ave. This is the southern end of Section 1 and the northern end of Section 2.
From the parking lot, facing MA-2, turn right and walk about 200 yards to the intersection of MA-2 and Phelps Ave. You will see the white blazes at this intersection. Turn left to go SOBO down Phelps; Turn right to go NOBO crossing pedestrian bridge over the Hoosic River. 09/26/23

From downtown North Adams head west on Rt 2 for 1.7 miles. Turn left (south) onto Notch Rd. There is a small Mt Greylock Reservation sign at this intersection. Proceed up Notch Rd, staying on Notch Rd (bear left) at intersection with Woodlawn Ave. At 1.2 miles from Rt 2, bear right (west) onto Pattison Rd--a reservoir will be on your left. After 0.6 miles, the parking area will be on the north (right) side of the road adjacent to the water treatment plant.

Parking is just east of the water treatment plant. 12/7/20 (revalidated September 2023)

See directions to the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). From the south continue north on Notch Road for about 3.1 miles to a small parking area on the left. From the north, follow Notch Road south for about 6.4 miles to the parking area, which will be on the right coming from this direction. This parking area is about 0.3 miles south of the Wilbur Clearing lot for the AT (Mile 3.1). The green arrow on the attached map marks the parking area. This may only be approximate as I do not have exact coordinates. The position was estimated from the Mt. Greylock Reservation trail map. Like most of the parking areas on Notch Road, this is day-use only.
|
The utility of this particular access may be limited. A short spur tail goes west from Notch Road at this point to the Money Brook Trail. According to the 12th edition of the MA-CT AT Guide, a right turn here (north) will lead to the AT in 0.5 miles. I have checked out the trailhead, but have not hiked this route. A short spur trail goes east from Notch Road to the Old Summit Road Trail. A right turn at this intersection leads to the Bernard Farm Trail which can be followed east to the AT (See Mile 4.2). Total distance approximately 05 0.6 miles. 12/7/20

See directions to the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). From the south continue north on Notch Road for 3.5 miles to a parking area on the right. From the north, follow Notch Road south for about 6 miles to the parking area, which will be on the left coming from this direction.
|
There is no parking at the actual trail crossing (Marker A on the attached map). The parking area mentioned is about 0.1 miles further south (Marker B). The area around the parking lot is apparently known as Wilbur's Clearing. This is a day-use only parking lot. A 0.1-0.2 miles blue-blazed trail leads east then north to meet the AT about 0.1 miles from the road (Mile Marker 3.2). Alternatively one may walk up the road to the trail. A third option is provided a blue-blazed trail on the west side of the road. It parallels the road and reaches the AT just west of the AT crossing of Notch Road. 12/7/20

From US 2 in North Adams, follow Notch Road south. There is a sign for Mt. Greylock Reservation. There are some twists and turns but stay on Notch Road. About 2.5 miles from US 2, the road takes a sharp right turn. Just beyond this there is a large parking lot on the right. This is very near a gate open in summer, but closed in winter. Thisis the point wher the southbound Notch Road enters Mt. Greylock Reservation.
|
This is a long access trail, although viable.

Robinson's Point Trail: Follow the directions to Wilbur's Clearing parking then proceed approximately 2 miles further southbound on Notch Rd. The trail intersection with the road is obscure, and parking (day use only) is limited to 2 cars alongside the road.
|
AT is approximately 0.1 mile east (uphill) of the road Better option is to use the Summit parking lot (fee). For access from the south, use directions for Rockwell Rd, turn left at the 3 way stop at Summit Rd, and proceed approx 1 mile to this intersection.12/17/20

See directions to the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). From the south continue north on Notch Road for about a mile to a small parking area on the left. From the north, follow Notch Road south for about 8.5 miles to the parking area, which will be on the right coming from this direction. The green arrow on the attached map marks the parking area. There is a cross-walk painted on the road here. I believe the trail sign to the east says 'Shortcut to AT'. This is apparently also a day-use only parking lot.
|
The Robinson Point Trail to the east meets the AT in about 0.1 miles. The northbound AT is left (north) while the southbound is right (south). Coordinates at the AT intersection are 42.6701 -73.1657. To the west of the parking area, the Robinson Point Trail continues 0.3 miles to the view from Robinson Point. 12/17/20

The AT crosses Summit Road on the northern side of Mt. Greylock. There is a crosswalk at the crossing. No parking is possible here and no shoulder, so it is not a good access point. The parking lot at the summit is only about 100 yards south on the AT. 12/8/20

General note for Mt Greylock Trails. The A.T traverses the summits and ridgelines of the peaks that make up the Mt Greylock Reservation. There are numerous side trails from the lower elevations on both sides (east and west) that are not described in these pages. See https://www.mass.gov/locations/mount-greylock-state-reservation for full information and a detailed trail map.

Greylock Summit: See directions to the intersection of Rockwell Road and Notch Road (Mile 6.8) [I've made some edits to this, below] . At the three way stop sign, continue straight on what is now Summit Rd. The road circles around the summit cone. At a traffic circle, bear left to parking. Bascom Lodge is to the right while the War Memorial Tower is straight ahead. There are many parking places available but on a busy day, there might be problem finding one. A fee (currently $5 for Mass vehicles, $20 for out of state) is charged for parking. Overnight parking is permitted. Note that road access to Mt Greylock is closed in the winter (early Nov to mid-May).
|
The AT is actually accessible here from about Mile 6.1 - Mile 6.4. Southbound the trail climbs the north side of the summit cone, reaching the parking lot near where the old ski building for the Thunderbolt Ski Trail is located. It loops around the summit, passing the tower and then crossing the traffic circle mentioned above. It then begins the descent down the side side of the mountain towards the intersection of Rockwell and Notch Roads. 12/17/20

Intersection of Rockwell, Notch and Summit Rds: From the south: Follow US 7 north through Pittsfield to Lanesborough. Bear right on North Main Street where there is a sign for Mt. Greylock Reservation. Follow subsequent signs for Mt. Greylock. At the Visitor's Center (gate closed in winter--early Nov to mid May), the road becomes Rockwell Road. It is about 8.5 miles to the 3-way stop intersection of Rockwell Road and Notch Road. Here Rockwell changes to Summit Rd and proceeds straight towards the summit while Notch Road goes left to Robinson's Point and Wilbur Clearing parking areas. Day use parking at this mile point is to the east of this intersection (4-5 cars).
|
From north: From US 2 in North Adams, follow Notch Road south as per instructions to Wilbur's Clearing parking. It is about 4 more miles to the intersection with Rockwell and Summit Roads. 12/17/20

The AT crosses MA 8 in Cheshire 0.5 miles north of the intersection with Church St. and West Mountain Road. This is the official southern end of Section 2 and the northern end of Section 3. There is no parking available here. Parking is available at the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail. (See Mile 0.6 of Section 3.)

Rotate the street view to see the northbound trail. It leaves from the left side of the road just to the right of the dumpster. The southbound trail is less clearly visible, but can be seen by rotating the view to the south. As I recall it goes through the strip of trees next to the fence in the view. From there it crosses a field. towards School St. 12/8/20
