GPS 42.1839652,-73.2905322 Trailhead lot located about 4 miles west of Great Barrington (many stores, laundry, backpacking store, cobbler, lodging, restaurants and bus service).
|
The parking area is accessed via a short gravel entrance on the north side of MA 23 just a short distance west of the intersection of MA 57/183. don't mistake the pulloff area nearby as your destination (like I did my first time). A sign that indicates the Monterey/Great Barrington town line is just across the road from the entrance. If coming from Great Barrington, the entrance is 3.8 miles from the intersection where MA 23 goes east from US 7. There is a large sign announcing this is parking for the Appalachian Trail. The northbound trail (to Section 7) leads out from the parking lot. The southbound trail to Section 8 crosses the road and heads towards East Mountain. 05/30/21

From the AT parking lot at Mile 0.0 near the intersection of MA 23 and MA 57/183 near the Monterey town line, go west of MA 23 for 1.2 miles (by my odometer), then go left (south) on Lake Buel Road. The AT parking area is 1.2 miles further on this road. It is on the left (east) side of the road. If coming from Great Barrington, Lake Buel Road is 2.8 miles from the point where MA 23 goes east from US 7 in Great Barrington. Go right on Lake Buel Road for 1.2 miles.
|
There is a sign for Appalachian Trail Parking at the entrance to the lot. The marker and street view on the attached map show the location of the parking area.. The AT is a few hundred feet further south on Lake Buel Road. At the crossing, the northbound trail goes east while the southbound goes left. Parking available in lot 100 yards west of AT crossing. Great Barrington is 3 miiles west.

From the intersection of MA 23/41 (Maple Avenue) and US 7 in Great Barrington, go south on the later for 0.9 miles. Turn left on Brookside Road. This becomes Brush Hill Road and then Homes Road. The trail crossing is 2 miles from US 7. The road climbs steadily from US 7. The crossing is near the high point of the climb. There is roadside parking for a few cars here.
The intersection of US 7 and Brookside road is about 11 miles north of where US 7 goes north from US 44 in North Canaan, CT
|
Rotate the street view from northeast to southeast to see the roadside parking. Rotate to the southwest to see the southbound trail. Because of shadows, the northbound trail is not easily seen in the east view.GPS N42.15493 W73.34087

Parking and Trail Crossing: 42.144427, -73.360080
The intersection of Kellogg Road and US 7 is about 3 miles South of the traffic circle intersection of US 7 and MA 23/41 (Maple St.) in Great Barrington. Go east on Kellogg Road. In 0.2 miles, just before the bridge over the Housatonic River, a driveway goes off to the left and descends to a parking area on the west bank of the river. Park in such a way as to NOT BLOCK FARMING ACCESS TO THE CORNFIELD.
|
IMPORTANT!!! Per the Appalachian Trail Conservancy: As of 09/20/2024, the Kellogg Road Bridge in Sheffield (NOBO mile 1,528.9) is permanently closed to vehicle traffic. The bridge will remain open for pedestrians and the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) over the bridge will remain open. The A.T. parking on the west side of the bridge will remain open, but visitors will need to access the parking lot from north via U.S. 7.
There have been reports of vandalism over the years.
Northbound follows the white blazes back up the driveway and crosses Kellogg Road Bridge. Southbound departs north along the river from the parking lot.

The trail crosses US 7 2.5 miles south of the intersection of MA 23/41 and US 7 in Great Barrington and 9.5 miles north of the the point where US 7 goes north from US 44 in North Canaan. There is no parking right at the intersection, but see above listing for other possibilities
|
The markers on the attached map indicate the crossing. The trail can clearly be seen on the satellite view. Rotate the street view to the west to see the southbound trail to Section 9. The northbound trail to Section 8 is less obvious in the east street view. There is no parking at the AT but available on Kellogg Road .9 mile north at the bridge over the Housatonic. See Mile 7.5 of Section 8. Sheffield ( 3.3 miles to the south) has lodging, restaurants and markets. 6/13/20
