Trail cross Va 650 at its intersection with VA 16, 2.6 miles north of Troutdale and 5 miles south of Sugar Grove via VA 16. GPS N 36.7202 W 81.4614
|
The marker on the attached map shows the intersection of VA 16 and VA 650. Rotate the street view to the west to look down VA 650. This was taken before the installation of a parking area. (See next listing). The trail crossing is a short distance down VA 650. Here the northbound trail goes right to Section 41 and ascends. The southbound to Section 42 goes left and descends. 08/30/2017

The Street View on the Google map shows a fence and grassy area. However an off-street parking lot has been installed at Dickey Gap with dedicated spots for 5 vehicles. It is likely that up to 8 can be parked there in a pinch. See pictures for this section. 08/30/17 (revalidated April 2022)

From the intersection of VA 16 and VA 650 (Mile 0.0) continue south towards Troutdale on VA 16. In 0.7 miles, just beyond the Smyth-Grayson county line, go right on VA 741. Follow it 0.4 miles to the Comers Creek Falls Trailhead which is on the right just past the bridge on Comers Creek.Parking is very limited. VA 741 is a narrow gravel road. However I was able to pull off the road onto the grass at the trailhead. The marker on the attached map indicates the trailhead. GPS at trailhead N 36.7115 W 81.4744
|
Follow the Comer Creek Falls Trail north. At 0.1 mile this intersects the Iron Mountain Trail, then descends another 0.3 miles to meet the AT. Southbound is straight ahead. Nortbound is to the right. Comers Creek Falls is 0.1 miles to the right. Coordinates at the falls are 36.714317°, -81.474083° .6/12/07
Revalidated on 1/17/22. Reminder: Bridge over Comers Creek at the waterfall has been washed out, so crossing it is difficult in Winter and at high water times.

From the intersection of VA 16 and 650, go west on gravel VA 650 for 1.4 miles to USFS 84. Go left on USFS 84, which is initially paved. Follow it a short distance to the Hurricane Campground entrance. Stay on USFS 84 which goes left and becomes a gravel road. There is dirt parking area on the left just after the turn. See attached map. The marker indicates the trailhead at the intersection. GPS at intersection N36.72195 W81.4873
|
From the parking area walk back toward the point where USFS 84 turns at the Huricane Campground entrance. The trailhead is just to the right at this intersection. The blue-blazed Dickey Gap Trail follows an old wood road. It is 0.4 miles to the AT. Once at the AT, southbound is right, northbound is straight ahead. 12/02/09 Revalidated on 1/17/22

GPS Location: 36.696600, -81.506600
From I-81 it is paved the entire way EXCEPT that my Garmin wanted to take UNNECESSARY short cuts on gravel roads. Do a little research beforehand so you know what to ignore. From Troutdale on VA 16, follow VA 603 west for four miles. Parking area on the left (south). Alternatively the parking area is 8 miles east of US 58 at Konnarock and 20 miles east of Damascus.
|
Parking is tucked away off the road. The marker on the attached map indicates the entrance to the parking area. Rotate the street view to the west to see the northbound AT (to Section 42) going right from the road. Rotate the street view to the south to see the parking area. The south bound trail to Section 43 leaves from the back of the parking area. Note: Vandalism has been a problem at this parking area in the past Revalidated: April 2024 by Nancy H.
