Route from south: From the intersection of NJ 23 and NJ 284 in Sussex, go north 6.3 miles on NJ 284 past Quarryville to AT crossing. This is 0.1 miles past the intersection with Oil City Road.
Route from north: From Unionville follow NY 284 south. This becomes NJ 284 once it crosses the state line. The crossing is 0.4 miles past the intersection with State Line Road.

Parking is in a large dirt pull-off on the west side of the road. The crossing is indicated by the marker on the attached map. GPS N41.28832 W74.5521. The parking area and the southbound trail to Section 3 can be seen by rotating the street views from this point to the west. The northbound trail to Section 2 an be seen going off to the right in the north view. 9/7/20

Area is big pull off that always seems to have a large puddle in the middle of it. Room for 5 or so cars logically parked. Short bushwhacked trail leads to AT. To go northbound cross road and go immediately over bridge and puncheon. Go uphill into open field going southbound. 9/7/20

From the intersection of NY 284 and Main St. in Unionville, continue south on NY 284 for about 0.1 mile. Take the second right onto Jersey Avenue. The state line is reached in 0.3 miles. Here bear left on Lott Avenue. The trail crossing is just a short distance down this road. There is a very small parking pull-off on the left immediately after crossing a small bridge.

The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the parking area. GPS N41.29653 W74.56265. The northbound trail goes right (east) from the parking area towards NJ 284. (See south view on https://goo.gl/maps/Y1uxrKqhL7B2 )The southbound trail goes right from the parking area on the road and crosses the bridge. (See north view in above). In 150 feet the trail goes left (west) towards Unionville Road. Barking dogs behind fence are always present when in this area.

Once on Mt Salem Road go 3.8 miles east from County Road 519, then go left (north) on Goldsmith Lane for a couple of hundred feet to the trail crossing. From Unionville Road go west 0.3 miles, then go right on Goldsmith Lane to the trail crossing. Note the comment in the previous listing about parking. goldsmith Lne is actually a private road into somebody's farm. At the crossing, the southbound trail goes left (west) towards Vernie Swamp, while the northbound goes right towards Unionville Road. There are parking pull-offs on Mt. Salem Road. 11/29/20

A few pull-overs that get muddy and are not obvious. Have parked here over a dozen times, all seasons and have not had incident. Road is not busy and is right on NJ/NY border. Going up is northbound toward Vernie Swamp and crossing street into flat woods leads southbound. 07/28/18

Once on Mt Salem Road go 1.5 miles east from County Road 519, then go left (north) on Ferguson Road for 0.5 miles to the trail crossing, whichis just south of the state line. From Unionville Road go west 2.3 miles, then go right on Ferguson Road to the trail crossing.

The trail west (trail south) of Ferguson Road can be clearly bee seen as it crosses a pasture on the satellite view of the map attached above. There is a short jog that is well marked and the stile is there, but no longer in use. I have seen signs that there is absolutely no parking on Ferguson Road. I would park at the better spots listed on this site. 7/26/20

From the north: Take Exit 2 off I-84 in New york. Go south on Mountain Road, soon crossing US 6. In 3 miles cross the state line. The road becomes County Road 519 in New Jersey. Continue another 1.1 miles to the intersection with Mt. Salem Road. Go left onto Mt. Salem Road.
From the south: Go north on County Road 519 from the intersection with NJ 23 7 miles west of Sussex and 0.9 miles east of the High Point State Park headquarters. In 1.5 miles, go right on Mt. Salem Road. .
Once on Mt. Salem Road, go east 0.6 miles, then go left on Courtwright Road. The trail crossing is 0.7 miles further. Here is a route from the east. From the intersection of NY 284 and Main Street in Unionville, go west on Main StreetIn 0.3 miles bear left on County Road 36. Very shortly this crosses the state line. Somewhere in this vicinity, this becomes Unionville Road. A half mile past the state line, go right on Mt. Salem Road. Go west for 3.3 miles, then go north on Courtwright Road for 0.7 mile

The northbound trail comes in from the west to meet County Road 519. The street view to the west from the point labeled 920 County Road 519 shows the trail meeting the highway at the end of the guardrail. The trail turns left along the road, then goes right and enters a field. The street view to the east from the point labeled 978 County Road 519 shows the northbound trail. The parking area can be seen by rotating this street view to the north. GPS of north trailhead N41.32865 W74.6432 Blue marked trail ,maybe 30 yards , leads to AT. Right ascends southbound to High Point State Park and eventually gets rocky once you pass connector for HP shelter. Left goes northbound and leads to open fields and nice reasonable hiking. 4/26/21

From NJ 23 near the High Point State Park Headquarters go north on the entrance road towards Lake Marcia and the High Point Monument. A fee is collected from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Follow the signs to the High Point Monument. Total distance is about a mile and a half. There is a huge parking lot for the monument. Picnic tables with nice views at far end of lot away from monument.

The red/green blazed Monument Trail runs along the west side of the parking lot and the monument. The marker on the attached map indicates the large parking area. GPS N41.3229 W74.6600. Probably the clearest access is to walk up the paved path to the monument and go right to meet the trail. Go left on the trail to reach the AT. The satellite view on the following clearly shows the trail on the west side of the monument. https://goo.gl/maps/GcXkjKNmGsL2. Follow the monument trail south. It crosses the park road and meets the AT about a quarter mile from the obelisk. Here the northbound AT goes left towards NJ 519 while the southbound goes straight ahead (south) towards NJ 23. There are several parking areas in the vicinity of Lake Marcia. Park roads and the Monument Trail may be followed east to the intersection with the AT. From NJ 23 near the High Point State Park Headquarters go north on the entrance road towards Lake Marcia and the High Point Monument. In 0.2 miles go right on Scenic Drive. This is just past the entrance station (fee charged from Memorial Day to labor Day) Scenic Drive is one-way. It goes along the east side of Lake Marcia. After turning onto Scenic Drive go 0.9 miles. There is a side trail to the right which leads to the Observation Tower on the AT. There is a large "Observation Platform" sign there. There is parking for a few cars roadside.

A 100 foot long side trail leads from the road east to the observation platform. The marker on the map indicates the trail head on Scenic Drive. GPS: NN41.316875 W74.6432 The street view to the east from this point shows the trail. The street view to the south shows some of the roadside parking. Remember that Scenic Drive is one-way northbound. 7/26/20

Really is not a great spot for parking if taking longer hike. These spots are used for quick walk up to lookout platform and back. For day hikes I would use numerous safe areas within the park e.g. the parking area at the Lake Marcia Dam They are not far and much more secure. Reminder: the Park charges a fee to access these parking areas from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Parking on Route 519 and Rout 23 do not require a fee at anytime during the year. 07/26/20

From NJ 23 near the High Point State Park Headquarters go north on the entrance road towards Lake Marcia and the High Point Monument. A fee is charged from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In 0.6 miles go right into the large parking area for the Lake Marcia Dam area. A smaller overflow lot is on the left. The marker on the attached map indicates the larger parking area. Two short unmarked paths lead east from this area to Scenic Drive. One starts in the parking lot close to the northeast corner. It is across from the bathrooms. The other is across from the snack bar. In either case go left on Scenic Drive and walk north to the Observation Platform Trail. Go right to reach the Observation Platform. Total distance from the Lake Marcia Dam area to the platform is probably about 0.3 miles. 7/26/20

This route is convenient if coming from the east on I-84. Take exit 2 off I-84 in New York. Go south on Mountain Road, soon crossing US 6. In approximately 3 miles, the road crosses into New Jersey and becomes County Road 519. At 5.5 miles from I-85, go right on NJ 23. The AT parking area is approximately 0.7 miles further. Take the first left after passing through the stone gateway which apparently indicates the boundary of High Point State Park. There is a sign for Appalachian Trail parking. The parking area is on the right a short distance down this side road. The marker on the attached map indicates the parking area. The lot can be seen in both satellite and street views. GPS of parking area: N41.3027 W74.6678 Note: A free permit is required if parking overnight, This is available from the park headquarters. They are open 8AM -4PM and sometimes later. If these times are unworkable, alternate arrangements can possibly be made if you call ahead.From I-84 (exit 1) in NY, take NJ 23 south about 4.7 miles into High Point State Park. Turn right onto a road where this is a sign for Appalachian Trail parking.. This is about 0.4 miles east of the High Point State Park Headquarters. The parking area is on the right a short distance down this side road. See next listing for more details.

The AT crosses NJ 23 near the High Point State Park Headquarters. (GPS: N41.3053 W74.6702) This is the southern end of NJ Sec 3. The crossing is shown on the map. To reach this point from the parking area one can walk along the NJ 23 shoulder about 0.4 miles. A far safer route is via a blue-blazed access trail. This meets the red-blazed Iris Trail in about 0.3 miles. Turn right here. The trail now blazed in both red and blue meets the AT in another 0.1miles. (See mm 0.1 of NJ Sec. 4). Turn right to reach the Headquarters and NJ go another 0.1 miles. Be careful crossing the busy highway.
