NJ 23
   Poor           Great

This route is convenient if coming from the east on I-84. Take exit 2 off I-84 in New York. Go south on Mountain Road, soon crossing US 6. In approximately 3 miles, the road crosses into New Jersey and becomes County Road 519. At 5.5 miles from I-85, go right on NJ 23. The AT parking area is approximately 0.7 miles further. Take the first left after passing through the stone gateway which apparently indicates the boundary of High Point State Park. There is a sign for Appalachian Trail parking. The parking area is on the right a short distance down this side road. The marker on the attached map indicates the parking area. The lot can be seen in both satellite and street views. GPS of parking area: N41.3027 W74.6678 Note: A free permit is required if parking overnight, This is available from the park headquarters. They are open 8AM -4PM and sometimes later. If these times are unworkable, alternate arrangements can possibly be made if you call ahead. The AT crosses NJ 23 near the High Point State Park Headquarters. (GPS N41.3053 W74.6702) This is the northern end of NJ Sec 4. The crossing is shown on the map. To reach this point from the parking area one can walk along the NJ 23 shoulder about 0.4 miles. A far safer route is via a blue-blazed access trail. This meets the red-blazed Iris Trail in about 0.3 miles. Turn right here. The trail now blazed in both red and blue meets the AT in another 0.1miles. (See mm 0.1 below). Turn right (northbound) on the AT to reach the Headquarters and NJ 23 go another 0.1 miles. The southbound AT is to the left. For a good map of High Point State Park see : https://www.nynjtc.org/sites/default/files/NYNJTC_HighPoint2017-WebsiteMap.pdf 07/07/18 Rangers in High Point State Park are awesome and professional. Please obey all rules. Please carry in and carry out trash. 5/9/20 40-50

Trail Junction
   Poor           Great

There is an important trail junction 0.1 miles south of the High Point State Park headquarters and the crossing of NJ 23. The Mashipacong (yellow-blazed) goes right here. The trail to the left is blazed both red and blue. The red is for the Iris Trail. The blue is the spur to the AT parking lot. To reach the lot follow the combined trail about 0.1 miles, then go left on the blue-blazed spur about 0.3 miles to the parking area. 11/29/20

Deckertown Turnpike (Iris Trail)
   Poor           Great

There are many possible routes from the east but almost all will take you through the intersection of County road 519 and Deckertown Turnpike. This is one from the town of Sussex.

From the center of Sussex go north on NJ 23 for about 0.6 miles, then go left on Libertyville Road. This eventually becomes Deckertown Turnpike. The intersection of County Road 519 and Deckertown Turnpike is 4 miles from NJ 23. Continue to follow Deckertown Turnpike for 1.4 miles. There is pull-off parking there. It is at the top of the climb from Sussex at approximately the Mile 8 highway marker. There is a pole with Iris Trail clearly marked and a small 4 car parking area at start of the trail or pulloff parking. The official AT parking lot is another 0.4 miles to the west. Cars can be seen parked on the satellite view on the attached map. GPS: N41.2553 W74.6841
The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate southern terminus of the Iris Trail. If this red-blazed trail is followed north along an old road for about 0.1 miles, the AT is reached at mm 4.6.Left southbound and right northbound.Straight downhill on Iris about a third of a mile to stream that is nearest watercourse for shelter. Shelter has jugs of water left in bear box donated by trail angel. A gated road on the south side of Deckertown Turnpike across from the Iris Trail terminus leads to Mashipacong Shelter (mm 5.5) 5/9/21 High Point/Stokes Ranger's are diligent and professional. Please follow all rules and carry out all trash. 5/9/21 3-4 roadside and about 4 in small parking area.

Decker town Turnpike (AT lot)
   Poor           Great

From the parking lot at Culvers Gap, take Sunrise Mountain Road (one way road) north. This becomes Crigger Road. Continue on Crigger until it ends at Deckertown Turnpike. Turn right on Deckertown. The parking log is on the left after mile marker 7. GPS N41.252436 W074.689575 We left a vehicle at Culvers Gap and took this route to Deckertown for a one-way hike from Deckertown to Culvers Gap. It was a beautiful fall day and the views were spectacular. 2/17/20 .20 mile to Mashipacong Shelter Southbound across the street. A lille more than 3 miles to Sunrise Mountain Pavillion. Great experience the AT type hike in either direction. Small ups and downs, rocks, roots etc. Nice solid views and small creeks. This area is the border of both Stokes and High Point State parks so there are many opportunities to use intersecting trails for loop hikes etc. Detailed maps for both parks are online. 3/15/21

Parking safety ratings for this mile marker should refer to the trail crossing (previous listing) The parking area at Stony Lake is also the trailhead for the Stony Book Trail. (See mile 12.3). As for the Tower trail, the hiking route starts out on the Station Trail which has blazes on many colors. This time follow the brown blazes. It is 1.3 miles to Sunrise Mt. Road and 1.5 miles to the AT. 3/15/21 Ample at Stony Lake Parking

Tower Trail (Sunrise Mt. Rd. Crossing)

From Culver's Gap on US 206 (See Mile 14.3) go north on County Road 636. Take the first left onto Sunrise Mountain Road, Go an additional 1.6 miles to the Tower Trail crossing. Sunrise Mountain road is one-way (from south to north) beyond the AT parking area. Roadside parking is permitted on the right side of the road. Room for 1 maybe 2 cars. There are pull-offs in area that are probably a better option. One way is almost 8 miles long. It becomes 2 way by campground and spring in Stokes State Forest. Staying straight will lead to Deckertown Road about 3 miles west of AT Parking (5.2) A left on Grau Road eventually turns into Flatbrook Road and winds its way to Route 206. A left will lead to Culvers Gap in 3-4 miles. From the crossing, go right (east) on the green-blazed Tower Trail. It is 0.3 miles to the intersection with the AT. Go right on the southbound AT to the tower. The northbound trail goes left towards Sunrise Mt. The tower is in the open area in the lower section of the satellite view on the attached map. Coordinates at the AT intersection are 41.1886 -74.7661. 2/2/21 Limited Roadside parking maybe 1 many pullovers in area. Signs say park on right side of one way road only.

Tower Trail (Stony Lake Trailhead)
   Poor           Great

The Stony Lake area is the actual trailhead for many trails, including the Tower Trail. From the intersection of US 206 and County Roady 636 in Culver's gap, go northwest on US 206 for 0.6 miles, then turn right on Coursen Road. This would be the second right. This is the entrance to Stokes State Forest. The Ranger Station is located here and an entrance fee is charged from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Go 2.0 miles, then go right towards Stony Lake, staying on Coursen road. The parking area, marked by the green arrow on the attached map, is on the left in 0.3 miles. It is an extremely large lot. There is no overnight parking allowed. Culver's Gap parking area is the only area in park that allows parking with permit. Ranger Station has information. The trailhead is at the far end of the parking lot near a bulletin board. The first part of the hike is actually on the Station Trail. It has many different color blazes. The Tower Trail is blazed win dark green., so watch for those blazes. It crosses Sunrise Mt. Road in 1.2 miles then goes an additional 0.3 miles to the AT (see previous listing). The Stony Brook Trail also begins here and these two trails along with the AT section between them makes a good loop hike. 11/24/19 Ample

Sunrise Mountain road is one-way (from south to north) beyond the AT parking area. Roadside parking is permitted on the right side of the road all along Sunrise Mountain Road. Culvers Gap (US 206)
   Poor           Great

The southern end of Section 4 (and the northern end of Section 5) are at the crossing of US 206 in Clulvers Gap. It is near the intersection of US 206 and County Road 636 (AKA Upper North Shore Road). The marker on the attached map indicates this intersection. Depending on the starting point there are many routes from the east. The map can be used to generate these. Those that utilize US 206 will probably pass through Branchville. From Branchville take US 206 north for about 3.5 miles to Culvers Gap and the trail crossing. GPS N41.1772 W74.7914 The immediate area at the trail crossing is quite built up and parking is limited to non-existent. There is an AT parking lot 0.3 miles to the north. SE mm14.1. The southbound trail reaches the highway just to the west of County Road 636 (see north street view on map), turns left and follows the south side of the highway highway before going right and re-entering the woos. 3/17/21 Deli closed as of March 2021 not sure if it is reopening anytime soon. A few in pullout directly across from guardrail.

Here is a route that I used from I-84 if coming from the east. Google Maps will not give it unless forced. Take Exit 2 off I-84 in New York. Follow Mountain Road south about 3 miles to the state line where the road becomes County Road 519. Stay on this route for the next 17 miles. It makes a number of turns which are usually well-marked. Turn right onto County Road 636 (Upper North Shore Road). Go 3.3 miles to US 206. The turnoff to the AT parking are is to the right 0.2 miles before reaching US 206. Here is a route to Culvers Gap from I-84 if coming from the west. Take Exit 46 off I-84 In PA. Go east on US 6 for about 2.5 miles to Milford. At the intersection with US 209 continue south on US 209. In 0.9 miles go left on US 206. This crosses into New Jersey and reaches Culvers Gap in 10 miles. Hike a little way in front of gas station/restaurants and hunting store. Directly across from store is a trail that leads to Stokes State Forest Headquarters and natural spring that is well used by locals. Trail is not marked, but used, just stay to right until you merge with blue trail and stay left. You will reach park road and make left for office stay straight on road for spring. Much safer option to reach headquarters. Walking 206 can be dangerous. 11/29/20 Route 206 is extremely busy. Use the AT lot .3 miles away is a better bet all around.
