Trail Crossing and Parking: 34.91227, -83.61884
|
The trail crosses paved US 76/ GA 2, 10.5 miles east of Hiawassee, GA and 16 miles west of Clayton, GA. There is a large paved USFS lot on the north side of the road. There is also a picnic area. During the 'bubble' period, it is not unusual to find trail angels-magic in this parking lot.
Northbound hikers (to Section 11) follow trail through picnic area and ascend along a small stream. Southbound hikers (to Section 12) cross road and enter woods.
A reminder that Georgia AT parking lots have a history of overnight car break-ins and catalytic converter theft.

From the intersection of US76/GA 2 and GA 197 go south on the latter for 5 miles, then turn right onto Wildcat Road (AKA FS 26-1). This turn is 1.3 miles south of Moccasin Creek State Park. Proceed on Wildcat Road for 7.5 - 8 miles to the point where the road is gated.

See pictures for GA Section 12 for a sketch map of the route. To reach the AT walk past the gate and continue up the road for 0.5 miles in Addis Gap. Here the northbound trail is to the right, the southbound is to the left. 07/20/12

REMINDER...the trailhead for access to the intersection with Wildcat Road and the AT is at a gate with Wildcat Road approximately .5 to 1 mile from the AT. We DO NOT have those coordinates at this time and would appreciate anyone who can supply them.

June 2020 Wildcat Creek Road is currently closed due to damage caused by landslides I called the Chattooga River Ranger District 706 7546221 this morning and was told that the request for appropriations to fix the road is expected to be approved in October 2020 and then repairs will take time The ranger suggested I check back in about one year to get road status 06/04/20

I will echo what has been said, Wildcat Road is currently closed after you get about a mile in. That leaves a 7 mile hike to the trail. I was told that you can come in Mills Road from the other side and get to an approach trail if you HAVE to use Addis Gap. 07/09/20

I hiked thru Addis Gap March 2, 2021. There clearly has not been any car access in some time. I did not attempt to access the trail parking area by car at Addis Gap, I merely observed what it looked like hiking from Unicoi Gap to Dick's Creek Gap. It was clear that no vehicles had been there in some time, the road was pretty well grown over with vegetation. Looked more like a hiking trail. 03/04/21 (AT Parking editors note: based on the information supplied by Rick Teetsel, I confirmed once again with the Chattooga River Ranger District that Wildcat Creek Road remains closed for road access to the AT parking area due to washouts) April 2022 update: Wildcat Creek Road access remains closed.

Approximate GPS for area of safe parking: 34.866687, -83.666647 (to our users, it would be helpful to have GPS coordinates of gated trailhead; please submit if you have it)
Addis Gap can be accessed from the west by way of a fire road and side trail. From the intersection of US 76 and GA 17/75 just east of Hiawassee, take 17/75 south for 3.5 miles to a crossroad. Owl Creek road is to the right and Mill Creek Road is to the left. Take Mill Creek Road. In about 1.2 miles you will reach an intersection where Mill Creek Road becomes a gravel fire road (at this point the paved road veers to the right and ends on private property--if you accidentally do this, backtrack to the intersection and continue up the gravel Mill Creek Road). Continue on the gravel Mill Creek Road for about 2.7 miles where you will see, diagonally to your left, an old slightly overgrown road. This old road is now gated, and can be used as an approach trail to Addis Gap intersection with the AT. Look for parking that does not block any road access or the gate; you may have to drive as much as a 10th of a mile to find a good pull-off spot. After parking, walk back to the gated approach trail and begin walking in an uphill NE direction. The path will wind and take you directly to the AT in about 1 mile with about a 500 foot elevation gain. The trail is NOT blue blazed, but it is an obvious trail that can be slightly overgrown in parts, but easy to follow.

A 4WD vehicle is recommended for this fire road, although use of a passenger car may be possible. 08/29/24
Editor's Note: Rohland AT Parking Editors have not accessed this location. This is a previously undocumented access to Addis Gap, but has been alluded too previously in the Wildcat Road access comments by another hiker. Map link has been added by editor based on the information provided by the submitter. We would love it if anyone using this access could take a picture of the described gated approach trail and parking availability to add to our website.

The community of Mountain Scene, Georgia is 7 miles south of Hiawassee or 11.5 miles north of Helen on GA 17/75. There go east on Corbins Creek Road (AKA FS 698). Go southeast for 10 miles to the intersection with FS 79 (Tray Mt. Road) in Tray Gap. The AT Guide to NC/GA says this gravel road is usually passable by cars. Other sources warn that portions of it are steep. The trail crosses Tray Mt. Road a short distance to the east (right). There is a fairly large dirt parking in the gap. There is a picture of it in the views at the bottom of the map.

The northbound AT to Dick Creek Gap goes north, southbound to Unicoi Gap goes south. 06/21/14

An alternate route is to follow directions to Indian Grave Gap. Continue south on Indian Grave Gap Road for 0.6 miles to the intersection with Tray Mt. Road (FS 79). Go left and proceed 1.8 miles to Tray Gap

I have not visited this area so everything is book information. I know nothing of the quality of the road. 06/22/14

Do not follow GPS from Helen to get to Tray Gap. It takes you via a gated road (May 2021). To get to Indian Grave Gap parking lot or Tray Gap from Unicoi Gap parking lot, take Hwy 17 north to Indian Grave Gap Road on the right. When you arrive at Indian Gap parking lot, go past it to get to Tray Gap by taking the next really sharp left. That road will cross over the AT and continue less than a mile to Tray Gap parking.
|
Both Tray and Indian Grave Gap parking areas have room for several vehicles. You will need a high clearance vehicle to make it over a wide creek. The road otherwise has a few holes but is overall decent for a Jeep-type vehicle. 05/20/21

In a March 2022 email communication I had with the forest district ranger concerning access to Tray Gap without a 4x4/high clearance, she suggested FSR 698 (Corbin Creek Road) was currently the only road in fair condition suitable to a low clearance vehicle.
My March 2022 experience: access Tray Gap from Forest Service Road 698 (Corbin Creek Road) off of paved Highway 17/75 (near Hiawassee's Mt Zion Baptist Church). Mt Zion Baptist church is a good landmark. Coming South from Hiawassee, if you pass the church you have gone too far, coming North from Helen, turn is just past the church. The turn onto FSR 698 is a little tricky to find. You are making a U-turn of sorts turning onto a signed road that starts with the letter 'M', sorry, don't fully recall its name and it is not named on google maps either, and then an IMMEDIATE right onto FSR 698.
The map link I created gives you a feel for the path, though as mentioned before, the signage for where to turn is not immediately called Corbin Creek Road. The long gravel road (we took close to 45 minutes to get to the gap) was in decent shape (we drove it in a Honda Odyssey minivan), however, there were gullies starting to form in a few areas that if they are not attended too, could make it difficult in the near future for lower clearance vehicles. At the gap, there is a confluence of forest roads. There are places to pull off for a significant amount of cars. There is an area with several firepits/rings and a lot of empty beer cans were strewn around. Makes me think this is an area that folks come to hang out, which may explain some of the warnings of damaged vehicles in the past. We parked overnight on a weekday and experienced no problems. 05/19/22 (revalidated April 2023)

The AT crosses Tray Mountain Road (FS 79) here. The position may only be approximate. It does match the position on the overlay on the attached map, but I tend not to trust that. The coordinates are from the picture submitted by pjwetzel@gmail.com. To reach this point see instructions to Indian Grave Gap, Mile 14.0. Continue south another 0.6 miles on Indian Grave Gap Road to the intersection with Tray Mountain Road, take a sharp left turn and proceed approximately another 0.7 miles to the crossing.
|
I do not know anything about the parking situation here. At the crossing, the northbound trail goes east (right if driving from Indian Grave Gap), while the southbound trail goes west (left). 01/01/10

Follow GA 17/75 south 9.5 miles from Hiawassee or 11.3 miles north from Helen to the intersection with Indian Grave Gap Road (FS 283). If coming from the north, bear left onto Indian Grave Gap Road. If coming from the south, make a sharp right hand turn. This turn is about a quarter mile south of the intersection of GA 17/75 and GA 180. Proceed 3.7 miles to the AT crossing (Marker on map) . I know nothing about the quality of this road. There is a dirt parking area at the crossing.(See Pictures for Ga Section 12). Tray Mountain Road (FS 79) is another half mile further south on Indian Grave Gap Road.
|
If you zoom in on satellite view on the attached map, the parking area is visible. At the crossing, the northbound trail to Tray Gap goes east, the southbound to Unicoi Gap goes west. 06/20/14

Following information is from: />http://theblueridgehighlander.com/hiking_trails/north_georgia/white.php
See directions to Indian Grave Gap (Mile 13.4). The trailhead for the Rocky Mountain Trail is on FS 283, 2 miles from GA 17/75. Since I do not have exact coordinates, the marker on the attached map indicates only the approximate location of the trailhead. Parking is reportedly very limited. I know nothing about the condition of the road here.
|
The Rocky Mountain Trail is a blue-blazed SIDE TRAIL which leads 1.0 miles to the AT on Rocky Mountain. Since this intersection is only 0.9 miles from the highway at Unicoi Gap, its utility as a access is probably llmiited. Coordinates at the intersection are 34.9041. -83.7324. 06/20/14

Go south on GA 17/ 75 11.6 miles from Hiawassee or north 9.2 miles from Helen to a large parking area on the east side of the road. The street view on the attached map show the parking area.
|
The northbound trail leaves from the south end of the parking area and goes east towards Section 12 and Dicks Creek Gap. The southbound trail to Section 13 crosses the parking area to the north end, goes left (west) to cross the highway and re-enter the woods. (Revalidated by Nancy H. / September 2024)
