The AT crosses NH 25 about .5 mile north of Glencliff.
|
There is actually a large dirt parking area at the trail crossing. It would be on the left coming from Glencliff. The northbound AT reaches the highway at the south end of the parking area, goes left along the road for several hundred feet, then just beyond the north end of the parking area goes right across the highway and into the woods. It immediately crosses Oliverian Brook. This can be difficult crossing in high water, but I had no problem. The marker on the attached map is set about halfway through the parking area. GPS: N43.9899 W71.8993. Rotate the street view at this point from west to south to see the parking area. The AT to Section 7 which goes from this parking area is the Wachipauka Pond Trail. The AT north (to Section 6) is the Town Line Trail. 7/5/2006 (revalidated July 2019)

The trail crossing of NH 25C is 3.7 miles west of the intersection of NH 25C and NH 118 in Warren. It is 9.6 miles east of Piermont.

The trail crossing occurs where the highway crosses a power line right-of-way. There is roadside parking for several cars at the right-of-way. The southbound trail comes out of the woods on the east side of the right-of-way, turns right along the then goes left to cross the highway and go back into the woods on the west side of the right-of-way. This parking area is indicated by the marker on the attached map. Rotate the street view from north to west to see the parking. The section of trail from here north to NH 25 is the Wachipauka Pond Trail. The section to the south to Atwell Hill Road is the Ore Hill Trail. 7/6/06 Updated 08/11/18

Atwell Hill road goes west from NH 25 in Wentworth. It is the first road north of the intersection of NH 25 and NH 25A. In 3.4 miles an intersection with Cape Moonshine Road is reached. Go right on Cape Moonshine Road. The trail crossing is another 0.9 miles. There is a parking pull-off probably good for only 1 car. . Alternatively one can take NH 25A east from the south end of the section (See Mile 9.8). In 1.8 miles go left on Cape Moonshine Road. The trail crossing is 2.1 miles further. Note: On some older maps and in some older trail guides the road at the crossing is called Atwell Hill Road.

There is a picture of the crossing in the Pictures for this section which shows the limited parking situation. The marker on the attached map indicates the trail crossing. GPS: N43.9158 W71.9645. The northbound trail to NH 25C ( to the right if coming from Wentworth or NH 25A) is known as the Ore Hill Trail. The southbound trail which starts directly across the road is known as the Atwell Hill Trail. 7/6/06 Updated: 08/13/18

Here is the route from the north.
Cape Moonshine Road intersects NH 25C is 4.4 miles west of the intersection of NH 25C and NH 118 in Warren. The Cape Moonshine Road intersection is 8.7 miles east of Piermont. Go south on Cape Moonshine Road for 3.3 miles to the trail crossing. If using this route the northbound AT will be on the left and the southbound on the right.

We have one report (2010) of a person using this spot to park overnight. He had no problems. See Parking Safety for more comments about the crossing. 08/13/18

The AT crosses NH 25A 1.9 miles easst of the Mt. Cube Farm and Sugar House, 4.5 miles west of Wentworth (NH 118). This crossing is also 9.9 miles east of Orford (NH 10) and 11.2 miles east of Fairlee, VT (I91).

Some older AT Guides comment about "difficult" parking here, but there is now a large parking pull off which can acomodate several cars. The marker on the attached map indicates the parking area. GPS: N43.9014 W71.9840 Rotate the street view from south to west to see the parking area. To go north on the AT to Section 7, walk east along NH 25A, then go left into the woods on the Atwell Hill Trail. The southbound trail to Section 8 leaves the parking area and follows the Mt. Large pullover that could hold at least 10-15 cars logically parked. Southbound trail leads off into woods on western end. Northbound trail passes pullover and goes left into woods about 100 yards from small road bridge. Sign for Camp Moosilauke is almost directly across from the southbound entrance to Mount Cube Trail(AT) on far end of pullover. I know parking has been listed as difficult, but I have seen much worse. 08/14/18 (revalidated July 2019)
