Taconic State Parkway

From I-84 take Exit 16 south onto the Taconic State Parkway . Continue to the first exit (Miller Hill Road). The northbound AT joins Miller Hill Road just west of the parkway, crosses under the parkway via an underpass, then goes left on Rockledge Road for a short distance before going right into the woods. This interchange marks the official south end of NY Section 5 and north end of NT Section 6. There were no obvious parking places anywhere near the trail here. See mile 0.3 of Section 6 for possible parking. 04/22/20 None at this point

Under Taconic State Parkway There does seem to be parking under the TSP on Miller Hill Rd., although I don't know about overnight. I did not see any parking near the RPH shelter on the side of the road, just No Parking signs. 04/05/21 1-3

Hortontown Road
   Poor           Great

Follow directions to the Miller Hill Road interchange of the Taconic State Parkway. At end of ramp, go right on Miller Hill Road. Descend steeply for 0.4 miles to the intersection with Hortontown Road. Go left (south). The AT crosses Hortontown Road in about 0.3 miles, just before the entrance to the RPH cabin (shelter). There is limited roadside parking just north of the trail crossing. When I first hiked this section I parked on the grounds of the RPH Cabin. I met the caretaker who had no problem with my parking there. On a more recent visit (June 2009) there was still a sign that read "RPH Cabin Parking", but there was a chain across the entrance. The entire area around the RPH shelter has been re-configured and there is no longer any parking possible on the shelter grounds. The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the parking area on Hortontown Road.4/22/20

Long Hill Road
   Poor           Great

See directions to the RPH Cabin on Hortontown Road (Mile 0.3). Continue south on Hortontown Road for 0.7 miles, then go right on gravel Long Hill Road. This climbs fairly steeply. The AT crossing is 1.1 miles up this road near the top of the climb. There is a dirt parking area on the right. If you are driving from Hortontown Road, the northbound AT goes to the right at the crossing, the southbound to the left. The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the trail crossing at the crest of the ridge. I do not have exact coordinates. 07/22/09 3-5

NY 301
   Poor           Great

See directions to the Miller Hill Road interchange (Mile 0.0). Continue south on the Taconic State Parkway for another 4 miles to the NY 301 interchange which is also the exit for Fahenstock State Park. At the end of the ramp, go right on NY 301 about 1.3 miles to the AT crossing which is at the west end of Canopus Lake. There are signs marking this crossing. The northbound AT comes in from the left (south), goes west for a short distance, the goes right (north) into the woods. The marker on the attached map indicates the last point. Refer to the picture of Canopus Lake and NY 301 in Section 7. Seen is a wide parking shoulder good for several cars on the south side of the road. Ther is also a shoulder on the north side of the road where the northbound trail reenters the woods. There is a parking area on the north side of the road about 0.2 miles to the east (just around the bend in the picture) and another shortly beyond that on the right. These each provide parking for an additional 6-8 cars.03/12/07

Update: See the pictures for this section for views of the parking area east of the trail crossing and on the north side of NY 301 at the crossing.
