From the editor: The following is a consolidation of information pre 2010. Please send updates validating the information or provide any updates to information that is no longer valid: The AT crosses PA RT 325 (State Game Land/SGL 211) some 20 miles Northeast of Harrisburg. The parking area is off the road and not visible from 325. It is a large parking area which can accommodate at least 20 cars and even an RV. It is fairly large and popular with fishermen and is heavily used during hunting season 09/30/20

The following is taken from http://www/satc-hike.org/update.html, a web page maintained by the Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club which maintains the AT in this area. From the intersection of PA Rt. 225 and Rt. 325 East, which is north of Dauphin, head east on Rt. 325 for about 8 miles. Between PennDOT mile markers 210 & 220, just past Camp Shikellimy, is a long parking pull-off on the right (south) side of the road. Park here and look for blue blazes on north side of the road at the end of guardrail.
According to the Google map directions, the last leg of this route on PA 325 is 7.7 miles long.
Update: 11/10. I have checked out the trailhead. It is not easy to see from the road. Another helpful landmark is Camp Shikelimy. The trail crossing is 0.2-0.3 miles to the east of this.
|
Rotate the street view on the attached map to the east to see the parking pull-off on the south side of the road. Rotate to the north west to see the trailhead for the Shikellimy Trail. This blue-blazed side trail goes north and climbs to the ridge, meeting the AT in 0.9 miles Coordinates at the AT are 40.4492 -78.8094. 2/2/10

According to state documents about the Ibberson Conservation Area, the pink blazed Whitetail Trail starts by the west gate near Back Road. It crosses the Victoria TRail in approximately 0.9 miles then reaches the AT in an additional 0.2 mile. The Whitetail Trail continues south then west to meet the Victoria Trail again on the south side of the mountain. At the AT intersection the southbound trail goes right, the northbound goes left. Coordinates at the AT are:40.43242 -76.85253 One could take the Victoria Trail from the parking area to the intersection with the Whitetail Trail, then go left for 0.4 miles to the AT. I did this in the opposite direction in 11/10. The section from the AT to the Victoria Trail is fairly steep. 02/04/10

Take Exit 67B off I-81 north of Harrisburg. This is just east of the Susquehanna River. Go north for 6 miles with the intersection with PA 225 near Dauphin. Turn right on PA 225 and go about 10 miles to the intersection with Camp Heron Road. Go right on Camp Hebron Road. According to the Google directions the road makes a couple of turns, so be sure to stay on Camp Hebron Road. In 3.8 miles when Camp Hebron Road turns north, continue east on Back Road. The entrance to the Ibberson Conservation area is 0.9 miles further on the right The markers on the indicate this entrance.
|
According to state documents and maps about the iberson Conservation Area, the blue-blazed Victoria Trail starts near the Education Pavilion and climbs 1.8 miles to reach the AT. It partially follows an old cross-mountain road. The Victoria Trail goes left (east) on the AT for about a hundred yards, then goes right and continues south to PA 325 (see below). I recently parked here (11/10). Here are some more details about the route given in the previous listing. If coming from the south on PA 225, the turnoff onto Camp Hebron Road is at the very bottom of the descent down the north side of the mountain. It is on the right shortly after crossing Powells Creek. There is a sign for the Ibberson Conservation Area at the intersection. There is also a sign at the intersection of Camp Hebron Road and Back Road. The one potentially tricky spot is about 0.4 miles further at what appears to be a Y intersection. Bear right here and stay on Back Road. There is a third sign for the Ibberson Conservation Area shortly after this intersection. 12/01/10

The blue-blazed Victoria Trail goes north, first across Gamelands 211 and then the Ibberson Conservation Area. At least in part it follows an old road. The AT is reached at the top of the ridge in 1.2 miles. The northbound AT goes right (east), the southbound trail goes left (west). Coordinates at the AT intersection are 40.4306, -76.8632. From there the Victoria Trail goes left on the AT for about 100 yards, then goes right on an old road and continues north down to the parking area for the Conservation Area. See above. Note Much of this information from state material about the conservation area. The trail distances are not the same as given in the AT Guide. 02/03/10

From 325 to 225 the parking area is at the crest of the mountain on the right after a caution hiker's sign. GPS N40.24.718 W76.55.794

The parking area is off of a very dangerous section of 225 - right in the middle of a switchback. Be very careful crossing the road here as well as pulling out of it - cars are traveling at 50 mph and can't see you.
Going from 225 toward Clarks Ferry it appears as if a new section of the trail has been created to accommodate a new microwave tower. This newer section is comprised of loose rocks which make it annoying to hike.

8/11/2003: Rt 225 - Bridge is now under construction to take hikers over this very dangerous road crossing. Completion is expected sometime in Nov 2003. In the meantime, parking may be very limited or may not exist at all due to construction equipment and materials. Hikers are advised to make other plans or contact the local club for more info. 9/15/2003: what is occurring is that a pedestrian bridge for hikers is being built over the highway thanks to a grant administered by PennDot. 3/31/2005: The pedestrian bridge on top of Peter's Mtn (Rt. 225) has been completed for a year.
The trail was relocated to avoid the microwave towers. The loose rocks were our complaint to the Mid Atlantic Crew. I had two of our trail workers put haul dirt in to fill between the rocks. However, there are still some work required.

We parked our motorhome in this lot while taking a day hike north. Upon our return while having a cup of tea in the motorhome before returning to our campground for the evening, we were harassed by a strange man. He had no shoes or shirt on and was stomping around the parking area swearing loudly and profusely that this parking area was not for campers. He was driving a late model silver/gray Pontiac Grand Am. If you encounter him, I think you should try to avoid him because he probably escaped from a mental institution. 4/14/2006

Take Exit 67B off I-81 north of Harrisburg. This is just east of the Susquehanna River. Go north for 6 miles with the intersection with PA 225 near Dauphin. Turn right on PA 225 and go 4.2 miles to the crest of the ridge. he entrance road to the parking area is on the right. Just beyond it is the new footbridge that carries the AT over the highway.
|
This map is similar to the one above, but shows a street view. Rotate to the southeast to see the entrance road to the parking area. Rotate to the north and up a bit to see the footbridge. From this vantage point, the northbound trail is right, the southbound is left. 02/04/10

This is at the intersection of 322 and 147 (under the bridge). GPS N40.23.782 W77.00.451 . Rotate the street view from northwest to northeast to see the parking. Rotate to the south to see the north bound trail (look for sign). The southbound trail crosses the bridge on a pedestrian walkway.

On a rainy October Sunday there were plenty of spots available but most were filled on Monday - probably commuters.
The views from this area going north are exceptional because of river views from both sides of the trail.

10 marked spots - can fit more cars on the gravel section as well as an adjacent gravel section

From Exit 67 off I-81 in Harrisburg, go north on US 22/322 for about 11 miles. Just as the highway starts to cross the bridge to Duncannon, take the exit for PA 417. The parking is on the left a short distance further.
|
The trail from here north to PA 225 is reasonably rock-free. However there is about a mile stretch west (trail south) of the northern junction of the Susquehanna trail that is very rocky. The three-quarters of a mile west of PA 225 is moderately rocky. 04/03/10

Hiked past this trailhead. Several cars were parked here. I would have parked here if I knew about it but it was nice to walk across the bridge anyway. It seems pretty safe. I am guessing it is a park and ride lot. (Spring 2017) 07/02/20
