The north end of this section is where the trail crosses US 50. The crossing is just west of the intersection of US 50 and VA 601. The marker on the attached map indicates the location of the trail crossing. GPS at trail crossing N 39.0168 W 77.9649
|
The street view on the attached map shows possible roadside parking on the
westbound side of US 50. This is where the northbound trail enters the wood. I am not sure of the legality or the advisability of parking here. See next listings for better parking in the area.
The northbound AT comes in from the west, crosses the median, then goes back into the woods to the east. 12/08/17

From the Eastbound side of Rt. 50 take Rt. 600 just west of Ashby Gap), Liberty Hollow Rd. There's a dirt parking lot just off the highway for about 6 or so cars. From the parking lot a well worn path, with VA Conservation Land signs, goes to the A.T. in less than 0.1 mi.
|
The location of the parking area on Liberty Hill Road is indicated by the marker on the attached map. The parking area can be dimly seen in the street view to the south from the westbound lane of US 50 at the intersection with Liberty Hill Road. GPS N 39.0183 W 77.9685 12/06/17

See entry for North Ridge Trail (Mile 2.5) for directions to the Sky Meadows State Park Visitor Center.

This is a new trail made possible by the purchase by the National Park Service of the former Ovoka Farm north of Sky Meadows State Park. The AT has been relocated through this area. This relocation is included in the current edition of the 'AT Guide to Maryland and Northern Virginia' (17th ed). To reach the AT via this trail follow the North Ridge trail approximately 0.7 miles west from the Visitor Center. The blue-blazed Ambasssador Whitehouse trail goes north and then west to meet the AT in an additional 1.1 miles. Northbound AT is right. Southbound as I recall is more or less straight ahead. Coordinates at the AT intersection are 39.002641, -77.980673 1/07/2010 updated 2/10/2021

From I-66 ( Exit 23, I believe) take US 17 north for about 7 miles or from US 50 take US 17 south for 0.7 miles. Go west on VA 710, the entrance road to Sky Meadows State park. Drive to Visitor Center. Ample parking
|
There are a number of state park trails. The blue-blazed North Ridge Trail, which goes west from the Visitor Center, is the shortest route (1.7 miles)to the AT. See AT Guide to Maryland and Northern Virginia for description of trail. A park bench is at the intersection with the AT. Northbound AT is right, southbound is left. 3/12/06

There is another parking area about 0.5 miles north of the one at Signal Knob. (See Mile 3.7). According to the 17th edition of the Appalacchian Trail Guide to Maryland and Northern Virginia, this is called the Orchard Parking area. Note the warning about the condition of the road.
|
The marker on the attached map indicates the parking area. An unblazed path goes east 0.1 miles to meet the AT. As I recall, the northbound AT bears east here, so at this point, the southbound AT goes right, the northbound AT goes more or less straight ahead. This area is part of the Thompson Wildlife Management Area. 11/15/09

See directions to Ted Lake Trail (Mile 9.2). Continue north on VA 638. At Parking Area 7 (See mile 6.2) paved VA 638 turns sharply left. Continue north on gravel road for about 2 miles. (estimated from map) to parking area for Signal Knob. Total distance from Linden and intersection of VA 638 and Rte. 55 is about 8 miles. This area is part of the Thompson Wildlife Management Area. Warning: I have not driven to this lot but previous ATC Guides have warned that the section of road past Route 638 is not driveable for most cars. The current 17th edition is silent on the matter. I do not know if this means the road has been improved or not. Note: the attached Google Map calls the access road the Appalachian Trail, but this is not the case.
|
See attached map. The parking area is marked by the green arrow. From there a trail runs east to meet the AT in about 0.1 miles. Both this spur trail and the AT are clearly visible on the satellite view. At the AT the southbound trail goes right, the northbound goes left. 11/15/09

See directions to Ted Lake Trail (Mile 9.2). Continue north on VA 638 for another 2 miles. The unpaved parking area is on the right. At this point paved VA 638 turns sharply left (west) and starts to descend the mountain. There is a bank of mailboxes at the north end of the parking area. The marker on the attached map indicates the parking area.

This is Parking Area #7 of the Thompson Wildlife Management Area. A gated old road is at the north end of the parking area. There is a "No vehicles--Foot Travel Welcome sign" here. Follow this road east. It steeply descends 0.2 miles to meet the AT. Northbound is left, southbound right. 3/11/06

(Parking Editor addition of Historical Information): See entry for Ted Lake Trail (Mile 9.2). Continue north on VA 638 for another 1.5 miles to the Trillium Parking Area (formerly Parking Area 6.) This is about 5.5 miles from the intersection of VA 55 and VA 638 in Linden. There are several communication towers in this vicinity.
The blue blazed Trillium Trail initially follows Trico Road, a gated old road, from the parking area, then goes right and meets the AT in 0.3 miles. Southbound AT is right, northbound left. Coordinates at the intersection are 38.9511 -78.0260.

This is a fee use area and requires a four dollar fee, paid online, to the Thompson Wildlife Management Area to park here. I left a note in my windshield, since I did not plan ahead to print, with the permit receipt number. Not sure how often they patrol or if they would ticket. Large, safe lot. 05/15/21

From the intersection of VA 638 and VA 55 in Linden, go north on VA 638 for approximately 4 miles. A large dirt parking lot is on the right. This is the Upper Ted Lake Parking Area ( formerly Parking Area #4) for the Thompson Wildlike Management Area. On the satellite view of the attached map, the markers indicate the entrance to the parking area.
|
From parking lot the blue-blazed Ted Lake Trail goes east 0.8 miles to meet the AT just south of Manassas Gap Shelter. The northbound AT goes left, the southbound AT continues straight ahead on an old road, coinciding with the Ted Lake Trail for 90 yards, before going south on a foot path. 3/11/06

The northbound AT follows Rte. 725 to this parking lot. It crosses the lot then reenters the woods, almost immediately crossing a stream on a very impressive foot bridge. 3/11/2006

Take Rte 55 east from Front Royal to jct. with VA 725 (about 1 mi east of Linden). Alternatively take I-66 to Exit 13. Go east 2.5 miles on VA 55 to intersection with VA 725. Parking on west side of VA 725 just north of intersection. There is a parking pull-of on south side of VA 55 where the southbound trail reenters woods. A few more cars could be parked here. More parking is available nearby at the PATC lot on VA 725. See Mile 11.6.

Rotate the street view to the south to the southeast to see the parking on the south side of VA 55. The southbound trail to Section 5 leaves from the west side of the parking area.
