Coming from I-78, the entire way is paved.

This parking lot serves as both the end point for Pennsylvania section 5 and start point for section 6. The trail crosses at GPS N40.526937, W076.223414 . There is room for about 3 cars there (DO NOT BLOCK GATE). An even larger Gamelands lot is available for 30 or more cars just .3 miles from the trail crossing (see section 5 parking accesses). At the time of this entry, there was a sign at the trail crossing directing you to its location with an arrow: GPS N40.525300, W076.216445. The southbound trail to section 6 starts up the gated road at the back of the parking area. The northbound trail to Section 5 starts from the other side of the highway. 10/15/20 (revalidated April 2022)

It is being reported 2 cars vandalized Saturday night (9/16/2017) at the AT 501 trailhead in Pennsylvania. Windows smashed. 09/18/17

NOBOs be careful to access the AT (white blaze) vice one of the many other trails in this area that lead from this same parking lot. SOBO crosses PA 501. NOBO towards PA 183 is very rocky! 10/15/20

From I-78: Take Exit 10 towards Frystown. At the end of the ramp go right on Camp Swatara Road (PA 645). in 4 miles go right, staying on PA 645. Continue another 0.8 miles to the trail crossing. There is parking on the west side of the road just south of the crossing.
From I-81: Take Exit 100 towards Pine Grove. Turn left on PA 443 and go east for 2.2 miles to Geary Wolfe Road (PA 645). Follow this for 2.5 miles to the trail crossing. The name of the road changes from Geary Wolfe Road to Camp Swatara Road somewhere in the vicinity of the crossing.

Rotate the street view to the southwest to see the parking. Rotate to the west to see the southbound trail. Rotate to the northeast to see the northbound trail. 02/12/10

To reach the parking lot for this trailhead, use the following coordinates in Google Maps: 40.480835, -76.531552, or 148 Old State Road, Jonestown, PA 17038. DO NOT park on Route 72!! See Mile 20.7.

The directions given in the previous listing are excellent. With the prohibition of parking along the side of PA 72 this is the only legal parking in Swatara Gap. The marker on the attached map indicate the location of the parking area. Cars can be seen parked there in the satellite view.

The southbound trail goes left (west) near the north end of the parking area and crosses the Old Waterville Bridge before reaching the crossing of PA 72. The northbound trail goes south along Old State Road. After crossing under I-81, the AT goes left off the road. 08/30/19
