From Mountain Creek Campground (See Mile 4.6 of Section 12) it is 5.1 miles to the the intersection with PA 233. Go straight and take the next left onto Bendersville Road. Pass the store (where there is space for day parking) and then take the next left onto Quarry Road in the park. Pass the old furnace to the parking lot just beyond. This is the official AT lot. A sign says that registration is required, but that may be only for overnight parking.

The actual northern end of Section 13 is on PA 233 east of Bendersville Road. The B marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location. Parking is in Pine Grove State Park which is actually part of Section 12. On the map, the furnace is slightly to the north and westt of the A marker. The AT lot is slightly to the north and east of the marker. The store is the building just north of the furnace. The Ironmaster's Mansion (now a youth hostel) is next to the store. The blue line indicates the path of the AT which follows roads to the northern end of Section 13. The southbound AT initially follows a gravel road north from PA 233. Rotate the street view to the north to see this road. 05/28/08

all dirt parking - very muddy when we were there in early spring. Not safe for overnight parking - it is best to use the guarded parking in Pine Grove State Park.

The store mentioned in the previous listing is on what is called Bendersville Road. If one goes left out of the parking lot for the store, it is only a short distance to PA 233. Old Shippensburg Road is on the other side of the intersection. Another point of reference is the intersection of PA 233 and Pine Grove Road. It is a few hunderd feet eeast on PA 233 to this intersection. Follow Old Shippensburg Road to its end. This is initially paved but becomes gravel. Initially it goes north but eventually swings east. It is 1.4 miles to the end of the road and the parking area. See pictures,

Note: From the parking area continue on foot a short distance straight ahead to the AT and the northern terminus of the Sunset Rocks Trail. The northbound AT is left, the southbound is to the right, soon crossing Tom's Run on a footbridge. 03/27/09

See Mile 2.2. Approximately 1.5 miles from PA 233, gravel Bunker Hill Road meets Michaux Road. A parking pull of is located a few hundred feet to the right on Bunker Hill Road. It is on the left side of the road. (See pictures.). The arrow on the attached map shows the approximate location of the parking area. I do not have coordinates for the parking area.

From the pull off continue on Bunker Hill Road for few hundred feet. The northbound AT comes in from the left as a footpath, turns left on Bunker Hill Road and follows this for about 0.4 miles. 03/30/09

Michaux road begins as an asphalt road then turns into a dirt road. Both the blue blazed sunset rock tail and the AT traverse this road. GPS at 233 turn off for Michaux Rd: N 40 01.342 W077 19.662

See Mile 2.2. The northern junction of the AT and Michaux Road is about 1.5 miles from PA 23, shortly after the intersection with Bunker Hill Road. There is a parking pull off on the right a hundred feet or so before the AT. (See pictures) The AT intersection is indicated by Marker A on the map attached at Mile 2.2.

The southbound AT reaches Michaux Road at a clearing (site of old Camp Michaux). This is at Marker A on the map attached at Mile 2.2. The AT follows Michaux Road for 0.2 -0.3 miles (blue line), then goes left into the woods on an old road at Marker B. 03/30/09

From the intersection of PA 233 and Pine Grove Road near Pine Grove Furnace State Park, go south on PA 233 for 1.6 miles, then go right on Michaux Road. This road is now all paved, though not very high quality paving. The southbound AT goes left in 1.5 miles, following an old road. There are a few parking pull offs just before and just after this. If you reach a T intersection with Ridge Road, you have passed this point. It is 0.3 miles back on Michaux Road. One of the pull offs looks like it has been recently bulldozed just for this purpose. Probably a total of 3-4 cars could park near this point. On the attached map, Marker B indicates this intersection.

The southbound AT reaches Michaux Road near the A marker on the attached map. It follows Michaux Road northwest for 0.2 -0.3 miles, then goes left on an old road at Marker B. The blue line is the route of the AT along Michaux Road. The thin white line at Marker B indicates the AT south bound. 03/27/09

From Pine Grove Forest State Park go SW on route 233. Turn right on Woodrow Road.

This crosses the AT 1.2 miles south of the Tom's Run Shelters. The road is very windy, gravel and hilly. It is not recommended to park here overnight - just use for day hiking. The map shows the intersection of Rt 233 and Woodrow Road. we do not have the actual GPS reading for the parking area.

Another route that avoids the steep and windy part of Woodrow Road is the following. Starting from the intersection of PA 233 and Pine Grove Road near Pine Grove Furnance State Park, follow PA 233 south for 1.4 miles. Go right on Michaux Road and continue on this to a T intersection with Ridge Road. Turn left an follow Ridge Road for 2.1 miles to the intersection with Woodrow Road. Ridge Road is paved at first but turns to a good gravel Road. Go left on Woodrow Road for 0.3 miles to the AT crossing. There are a few parking pull offs here, the largest being about a hundred feet further on Woodrow Road (on the left). See pictures. Note: Ridge Road to the right at the Michaux Road intersection has a large sign saying that the road receives only light maintenance and travel is at your own risk. This is why I have suggested access via Michaux Road.

On the attached map, the northbound AT going east is indicated by a thin white line on the road/ trail overlay. The southbound trail is not on the overlay but the trace can be seen on the satellite view.The northbound AT meets Woodrow Road, turns right for a few feet, then goes left back into the woods. 03/30/09

Ridge Road may also be used to access Woodrow Road from the other direction. See the listing for the AT crossing of Shippensburg Road (Mile 8.3). The northbound Ridge Road meets Shippensburg Road 0.2 miles west of the parking area. If coming from the parking area, go right on Ridge Road which is a good gravel road. Go 3.6 miles to the intersection with Woodrow Road. Go right 0.3 miles to the trail crossing.

See Mile 4.4. From Michaux Road follow Ridge Road 4.3 miles to Dead Woman Hollow Road on the left. Alternatively from Shippensburg Road, follow Ridge Road 1.2 miles to Dead Woman Hollow Road on the right. I do not think there is a sign. There is a gate in about 100 feet. Parking is just before the gate (See pictures). Beyond the gate, Dean Woman Hollow Road is a snowmobile/ hiking trail, eventually reaching PA 233.

The green arrow on the attached map marks the parking area. The AT crosses the parking area. The trail can be seen going from southwest to northeast even without the road/trail overlay. The northbound tail goes east, the southbound goes west.

From the intersection of Pine Grove Road and Route 233 near Pine Grove Forest State Park go SW on route 233 approximate 6.5 miles. Turn right on Arendtsville Road (AKA Shippensburg Road) and go 2.1 miles. From Route 30 at Caledonia State Park take Route 233 North and turn left on Arendtsville Road towards Shippensburg and proceed 2.1 miles. Parking lot is on right side of road next to the AT. See pictures. The green arrow on the attached map marks the parking area.

GPS: N 39.997474 W 077.404593 Safe for overnight parking - there are several homes on the road near this parking. The lot is a dirt parking area and muddy when we visited in early spring. The AT crosses the road just north of the lot. It can be seen going east to west across an open field. At the crossing southbound AT is west, northbound is east. (10/30/2005)

From US 30 at Caledonia State park, take 233 North. Turn left on Milesburn Road. Continue past Stillhouse Hollow Road. Turn Right onto Ridge Road. Continue on Ridge Road to a parking area across the road from the Rocky Knob Trailhead. This orange-blazed trail goes east crosses the AT in about .2 miles. The Rocky Knob Trail essentially follows the route of the "Forest Road" shown on the attached map. (10/30/2005).

The Birch Run Shelter is a little over 1 mile north of the Rocky Knob Trail crossing. The map shows the intersecion of Milesburn Road and Ridge Road (Marker A on the attached map). GPS N39.969153 W77.459804 We do not have a GPS reading for the actual parking, but it is probably at the Marker B on the attached map.

From the AT Parking area on Shippensburg Road, go west a half mile then turn left on gravel Ridge Road. The Rocky Knob Trail parking area is about 2 miles further. If coming from the other direction, the parking area is about 1.5 miles north of Intersection X (See Mile 12.5). The Rocky Knob Trail essentially follows the route shown as "Forest Road" on the attached map

This A marker on the attached map indicates the trailhead for the Rocky Knob Trail. The B marker is at the intersection with the AT, which can clearly be seen going north to south on the satellite view. At this intersection, the northbound trail goes north, the southbound goes south.

From the AT parking area on Shippensburg Road, go west another 0.5 miles, then go left on Ridge Road. The trail crossing is about 2.4 miles down Ridge Road. Roadside parking for a few cars is available. This can be seen on the satellite view of the attached map. If coming from the other direction it is 1.1 miles from Intersection X (See Mile 12.5)

From north on I-81. Take Exit 29 and go southwest on PA 174 to US 11. Go left on US 11 (King St.) for about 0.3 miles to Queen Street. Go left
From south on I-81. Take Exit 24 and follow PA 696 north towards Shippensburg. At one point this makes a left turn onto Fayette Stereet. Eventually US 11 (King St.) is reached. Go right for 0.7 miles to Queen Street. Go Right.
From the intersection of King and Queen St. follow the latter east. Somewhere the name changes to Baltimore Road. Eventually it bears north and reaches a stop sign at an intersection about 3.5 miles from the King/Queen St. junction. Go right here, staying on Baltimore Road. (To the left the cross road is White House Road.) Go 1.4 miles. Somewhere the name changes again to Shippensburg Road. Go right on Milesburn Road. Follow this gravel road 2.5 miles south. A narrow driveway goes off to the right to the cabin. The driveway continues, crossing the AT and going back to Milesburn Road. There may be one place to park just at the AT junction. In fact a car be seen parked in the spot on the satellite view of the attached map. Perhaps another parking place is on the east side of Milesburn Road just before the driveway. A blue-blazed trail goes into the woods here to a spring.

GPS for the Milesburn Cabin owned by the PATC is N 39 58.652 W 77 27129. This can be rented for a very reasonable rate. If not staying at the cabin, do not block the driveway. At the AT crossing which is marked by the green arrow, the southbound trail goes west, the northbound goes east. 06/26/09

A key intersection in this area is what I call Intersection X. It is indicated by the B marker on the attached map. Southbound Ridge Road changes direction and goes north and enters the intersection by the southeast leg. Northbound Milesburn Road enters by the southwest leg. They two roads coincide for about 200 feet then Ridge Road exits the intersection by the northwest leg and Milesburn Road by the northeast leg. To reach the Canada Hollow, Means Hollow, Ridge Road intersection follow the southbound Ridge Road (which still is going essentially north another half mile. This intersection is indicated by point A on the map.
Directions to Intersection X
1. From the AT parking area on Shippensburg Road. go west 0.5 miles on Shippensburg Road, the left (south) on gravel Ridge Road. It is 3.5 miles to the intersection, entering it by the southeast leg.
2. From Jct. US 30 & PA 233 (Caledonia State Park). Go north on PA 233 for 1.7 miles, then go left on Milesburn Road. (I didn't see a sign calling it Milesburn Road, but there are signs to Stillhouse Hollow Road and several others in the area. ). In 3 miles the intersection with Stillhouse Hollow Road is reached. Go right here staying on Milesburn Road and crossing a bridge. It is 1.4 miles to Intersection X, entering it via the southwest leg.
3. From Shippensburg via Milesburn Road: Follow directions from Shippensburg to the cabin. Continue another 0.7 miles on Milesburn Road, entering via the northeast leg.

The map calls Ridge Road going southwest Forest Road or Stillhouse Hollow Road. All the parking is roadside at the Canada Hollow, Means Hollow, Ridge Rd. intersection, but there is space for several cars. The southbound AT enters from the east, crosses the intersection and continues west .06/26/09

This point can also be reached by following directions through Intersection X to the intersection of Canada Hollow, Means Hollow and Ridge Roads (See Mile 12.5). At this intersection go left on Ridge Road. (It is not called this on the attached map). Go 0.4 miles then go right for 0.2 miles on Middle Ridge Road (mistakenly called Furnace Hollow Road on the map )to the AT crossing. There are a few pull-offs in the vicinity which will in total accommodate 3-5 cars.

The southbound AT comes out of the woods from the north at Marker A on the map. The trail to the north can clearly be seen running from northeast to southwest. At the road the southbound trail goes right and follows the road for a couple of hundred feet to Marker B then bears left back into the woods. The trail on the south side of the road can also be clearly seen on the map. Note: The intersections are not well marked and are hard to see from the road. 07/01/09

Coming from the north, a better route would be to get to the intersection of Canada Hollow, Means Hollow and Ridge Roads. follow Ridge Road south about 3 miles to the powerline.

What is labeled as Stillhouse Hollow Road on the attached map is really Ridge Road. The green marker indicates the point where the road crosses the powerline. The trail is compass northwest along the right-of-way. It can clearly be seen on the satellite view of he map. 06/26/09

From US 30 at Caledonia State park, take 233 North (compass northeast) for 1.7 miles. Turn left on Milesburn Road. In 3 miles turn left onto Stillhouse Hollow Road. Go 1.9 miles to the intersection with Stillhouse Hollow Road. There is parking along the shoulders at this intersection. On the attached map, the "Forest Road" running east is Stillhouse Hollow Road. The entire trail from Caledonia State Park to Arendtville-Shippensburg road is very well maintained. There are nice shelters along this section. Unfortunately, there aren't any great views along this section.

From the north follow directions to Intersection X (See Mile 12.5). Take the southwest leg, going south on Milesburn Road. In 1.4 miles just after crossing a bridge, go right on Stillhouse Hollow Road and proceed 1.9 miles to this intersection. This area is apparently locally known as Sandy Sod.

Vehicle vandalism reported by www.cumberlink.com: The victim reported to police that while he was hiking between 10 p.m. Saturday (5/21/2011) and 10 a.m. Sunday (5/22/2011), someone vandalized his car while it was parked on Stillhouse Hollow Road, Chambersburg.

See Mile 15.6 for the route to the intersection of Ridge Road and Stillhouse Hollow Road. Turn left onto Ridge Road. The AT coincides with this for about 0.1 miles and then goes left into the woods. There is roadside parking near this point. The markers indicate this point. The southbound trail can clearly be seen on the satellite view going to the southeast from Ridge Road. (10/30/2005)

About 1.5 miles south of this parking area is the Quarry Run Shelter. This shelter is maintained by Jim Stauch, "Inn Keeper". It is a beautiful well maintained shelter that includes a Velux skylight and roll down wind block between the two leantos. The whole shelter has a large porch and a table under roof.

From the intersection of US and PA 233 near Caledonia State Park, go northeast on the latter about 0.5 miles to Quarry Gap Road. There is a sign for Hosack Run Campground here. Go left. Just past the campground the road becomes gravel. Follow it to a T intersection about a mile from PA 233. This is the end of the road open to vehicles. The road to the left is gated in both directions. There is a pumping station here. There is parking for several cars near the pumping station and in a couple of parking pull-offs. The attached map shows Locust Gap Road as open to vehicle travel, but it is not. The road is what is called the Locust Gap Trail.

The A marker on the map shows the parking area. From the end of the road, go left (southwest) on the Locust Gap Trail. The southbound AT comes in from the right in less than a quarter mile. This intersection is indicated by the B marker. The trail from the north is clearly visible on the satellite view. From this point the two trails coincide for some distance along the old road before the AT goes off to the left. 07/01/09

You can park overnight here. From the parking lot take the Ramble Trail west across Route 233 until it intersects the AT (approx 1600 feet). You can register your car at the Caledonia State Park office on Route 233 just north of the parking area. If the office is closed, you can drop your information in the mail slot in the door. There is also additional parking across Route 30 at Cottage #1. Both of these areas are patrolled by park rangers. Thru-hikers can use the Caledonia State Park campground showers for a fee. 4/10/21

The green marker on the attached map shows the parking lot on the northeast corner of the intersection of US 30 and PA 233. Rotate the street view to the northwest to see the parking area on the right side of westbound US 30.

The actual crossing of US 30 by the AT is about a half mile to the west. While I did see somebody parking there, I suspect that such parking is at best not prudent and possibly illegal. The AT can be reached as described in the previous listing. Update: The new park office is on the park road which leaves PA 233 about a tenth of a mile north from this intersection. 4/10/21

Parking is also available on the south side of US 30 just west of the PA 233 intersection. This is across from the Thaddeus Steven Blacksmith Shop (the solitary structure on the north side of US 30 seen on the attached map . The parking area can also be seen be seen on the satellite and street views. Rotate the street view to the south to see the parking. Rotate to the northeast to see the Blacksmith Shop which is actually a museum in Caledonia State Park. . I don't know about overnight parking here. Probably the nearby lot at the intersection of US 30 and PA233 is better for that. 4/10/21

The AT crosses US 30 1.6 miles east of the intersection with PA 997 and 0.6 miles west of the intersection of PA 233. Parking here would be difficult, if not unwise and probably illegal. There is a pullout by gate 20 feet away,but I would use other nearby parking. There is a hikers parking lot at the northeast corner of the PA 233 intersection. More parking is available across from the Thaddeus Stevens Blacksmith Shop. See previous listings for these. One could also park inside Caledonia State Park and walk back to this point via the AT.
