From the intersection of US 19E and US 321, follow the latter north (actually compass east). In 0.8 miles go right towards Dennis Cove. There are signs to Dennis Cove. I forgot to record the mileage from this intersection to Dennis Cove, but according to the Google map, it is 4 miles over a paved but narrow and winding road. The parking area is on the left. The northbound AT (to Section 4) goes left (if coming from Hampton) from the parking lot towards Laurel Falls. The southbound trail follows the road about 100 feet past the parking area, then goes right into Section 5. 07/13/09 6-8

Using GPS to Dennis Cove usually doesn't work. Pick up Dennis Cove Road in Hampton and follow very good road to well marked parking area. 11/10/16 6 1

Bitter End (USFS 293)
  Poor            Great

From the 'center' of the town of Roan Mountain, continue east (compass southeast) on US 19E. In about a mile go left onto Buck Mountain Road. The Roan Mountain Animal Hospital is at this intersection. There is also a sign for the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church. In about 2 miles go left at a T intersection onto Old Buck Mountain Road. In another mile, go right on Howard Harrison Road (or Lane). The pavement ends in about 0.2 miles. The road continues through an open area, the passes through a gate. In approx. 0.2 miles further, the AT crosses the road (now called USFS 293). Pull-off parking for 2-3 cars. The AT Guide says the gate mentioned is often closed, bur we found it open. Parking might be a problem if one had to park before the gate. The location of the AT crossing indicated by the green arrow on the map may be only approximate. At the crossing the northbound trail goes left, the southbound trail goes right. Note: The road overlay on the map is slightly off in the area of the trail crossing. 12/05/09 2-3 1

USFS 293 Alternate Parking

See directions above for directions to the trail crossing of USFS 293 at Bitter End. If the gate is closed there is parking on the grassy shoulder just before the gate. 02/26/12 2-3 1

Walnut Mountain Road
  Poor            Great

From Roan Mountain, TN take US 19E 1.5 miles to Shell Creek. Turn left on Buck Mountain Road. Go 4 miles to junction with Walnut Mountain Road. Turn left on Walnut Mountain Road for about a mile. 2/1/06 2

I would STRONGLY discourage overnight parking at Walnut Mountain Road and US 19E due to the potential for vandalism, especially US 19E where we have had numerous incidents of vandalism over many years. 5/16/06
For a more expanded description of the route to this crossing, see Mile 21.1 (Buck Mt. Road). Walnut Mt. Road is about a mile before the trail crossing of Buck Mt. Road. Go left on Walnut Mt. Road. In about a mile the pavement ends. From there it is about half mile to the trail crossing, which is not well marked. Limited roadside parking. See pictures. Coordinates for the attached map are slightly modified from those given at http://bp2.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip.aspx?tripId=47600. The marker shows the approximate location of the crossing. This should be viewed as just approximate. The northbound trail goes west (left coming from Buck Mt. Rd.), while the southbound trail goes east. 12/05/09 1

Campbell Hollow Road
  Poor            Great

See directions to Be trail crossing of Buck Mountain Road (Mile 21.1). Campbell Hollow Road goes left off Buck Mountain Road 0.2-0.3 miles before that point. That would make it about 4.5-4.7 miles from US 19E. Continue about 0.2-0.3 miles to the crossing. Parking opportunities appear to be limited at best. The trail crossing of Campbell Hollow Road (see pictures) is not well marked. The southbound trail comes out of a strip of woods on the north side of the road between two open areas, turns right for a short distance then goes left, reentering the woods on the other side. I have placed the marker on the satellite view of the attached map at what appears to be the strip of woods. As with all the other road crossings between 19E and Bitter End, there have been incidences of vandalism to parked cars, especially those left overnight. 11/11/08 Limited parking if any 1

Buck Mountain Road
  Poor            Great

The green arrow on the attached map shows the approximate location of the trail crossing. The exact coordinates were not known. On the satellite view, the Baptist church is the open area slightly southeast of the marker on the north side of Buck Mt. Road. 1/30/08 1

From the 'center' of the town of Roan Mountain, continue east (compass southeast) on US 19E. In about a mile go left onto Buck Mountain Road. The Roan Mountain Animal Hospital is at this intersection. There is also a sign for the Sovereign Grace Baptist Church. In about 2 miles go right at a T intersection, staying on Buck Mountain Road. Go about 3 miles further. Look for the trail crossing about 0.2 miles beyond the intersection with Campbell Hollow Road. Just beyond the trail crossing is the Sovereign Grace Buck Mountain Baptist Church. Except in front of the church, there appears to be little parking in the area. There are several spots in the paved area in front of the church. The AT Guide warns about vandalism here as with all the roads from US 19E to Bitter End. Sometimes this can occur during the day. However I parked in front of the church for a day hike on a Saturday and had no problems either with vandals or the Baptists complaining about me parking in front of their church. It would probably be best not to park there on a Sunday or overnight. 11/11/08 Limited parking 1

Bear Branch - US 19E
  Poor            Great

2.5 miles west of Elk Park, NC on US 19E. This trailhead is .9 mile west of the NC/TN state line. Overnight parking is discouraged due to past incidents of vandalism. 2/1/06 8

The AT crossing of US 19E near Bear Branch Road is 3.8 miles east of the intersection with TN 143 (Bear Branch Road) in Roan Mountain, TN. There is parking at the intersection but see the above warnings. The B marker on the attached map indicates the intersection. Click on the camera icon by B and rotate the resulting street view to the northwest to see the intersection and possible parking. The AT now crosses Bear Branch Road about 0.1 miles from 19E. It climbs a small hill, then descends to US 19E southeast of Bear Brach Road. The A marker on the attached map indicates the crossing. Click on the camera icon by A to get a street view. The view to the west shows the southbound trail (to Section 6) which initially follows the road visible in the view. The northbound trail (to section 5) is harder to see. If the view is rotated to the north the trail can barely be seen as it climbs some stone stops in the center of the picture. 8-10 roadside at intersection 1

Safer long-term parking may be available at the Mountain Harbour B&B located 0.3 miles west on US 19E. I believe they charge a very reasonable fee for parking. The owners, Terry and Mary Hill, are very hiker-friendly ad have a hiker's cabin (hostel) in addition to the B&B. 11/11/08 Ample at Mountain Harbour

Parking is also available at the point where the southbound trail leaves US 19E. Click on the camera icon for point A on the map given above. Rotate to the west to see this parking. The same warnings given for the actual intersection of Bear Branch Road and US 19E about possible vandalism apply. 06/06/11 2-3
