Swift Run Gap

Swift Run Gap is at Mile 65.5 on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. US 33 crosses the Blue Ridge here. This is one of the four access points to Skyline Drive. Parking is limited. There is room for 4-5 cars across from the intersection of the access road and Skyline Drive. At this point the AT from the north comes out of the woods and follows Skyline Drive over US 33 on a highway bridge. 2/21/2006 4-5

See attached map. Probably the best parking is roadside where the northbound AT leaves Skyline Drive. This area is indicated by the marker. Rotate the street view to the east see the parking spaces and the northbound trail to Section 10 climbing sidehill behind them. Rotate to the south to see the view down Skyline Drive. The southbound trail to section 11 trail follows this over the US 33 overpass then goes right back into the woods. 1/11/2010 1

The attached map shows the portion of the trail that runs along Skyline Drive in Swift Run Gap. Click on the camera icon by A and rotate he street view to the east to see the southbound trail meeting Skyline Drive. Look behind the back of the white car. The trail follows the road over US 33 and then goes right back into the woods. Click on the camera icon by B and rotate the street view to the west to see the trail at this point. 01/14/10 1

Hightop Parking

This parking area is at Mile 66.7 on Skyline Drive, 1.2 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33). It iis on west side of road. See satellite and street views on the attached map. Rotate the latter forth northwest to southwest to see the entire parking area. The AT crosses the road here just north of the parking area. Northbound is on west side of drive, southbound on east side. 11/20/09 6-8 1

Smith-Roach Gap

Smith-Roach Gap is at Mile 68.6 on the Skyline Drive (3.1 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33). Parking area is on the east side of the road. The AT goes by the parking lot on the south side and crosses the road. Southbound is on the west side, northbound on the east side. 2/21/06 8-10

Powell Gap

Powell Gap is at Mile 69.9 on the Skyline Drive (4.4 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33)). There is no parking lot here but one may pull off the road and park on the grass. See attached map and the street view. The AT crosses the road here. If driving from Swift Run Gap, northbound is on the left, southbound is on the right. Rotate the street vie to the north to see the northbound trail and south to see the southbound trail. 11/20/09 3-4 1

Simmons Gap

Simmons Gap is at mile 73.2 on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. This is 7.7 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33) and 32.2 miles north of Rockfish Gap (I-64). Simmons Gap fire road crosses Skyline Drive here. To east is a ranger station. Best parking is to go west on the fire road about 100 feet. Small dirt parking area on the left. AT crosses Skyline Drive at Simmons Gap. The southbound trail is on the west side, the northbound trail on the east side. 2/18/2006 6-8

See attached map. The best parking is a short distance along the fire road going northwest from Skyline Drive on the attached map. Rotate the street view to the northwest. The parking lot can be seen on the left side of the road. The street view to the north shows the northbound trail leaving from the northeast corner of the intersection. The view to the west shows the southbound trail leaving from the southwest corner of the intersection. 1/11/2010 1
