Simmons Gap
  Poor            Great

Simmons Gap is at mile 73.2 on the Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. This is 7.7 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33) and 32.2 miles north of Rockfish Gap (I-64). Simmons Gap fire road crosses Skyline Drive here. To east is a ranger station. Best parking is to go west on the fire road about 100 feet. Small dirt parking area on the left. AT crosses Skyline Drive at the intersection with the fire road. It goes southbound on the west side of the drive and northbound on the east side.. 2/18/2006 6-8
dlcul @ conncoll.edu
See attached map. The best parking is a short distance along the fire road going northwest from Skyline Drive on the attached map. Rotate the street view to the northwest. The parking lot can be seen on the left side of the road. The street view to the north shows the northbound trail leaving from the northeast corner of the intersection. The view to the west shows the southbound trail leaving from the southwest corner of the intersection. 1/11/2010 1

Small parking area on the compass west side of road. Coming from Swift Run Gap, this would be on the left. The AT crosses Skyline Drive a couple of hundred feet 'north' of parking area.. In this area the northbound Skyline Drive actually goes compass south. 2/19/2006 5-6

Ivy Creek Spring Trail
  Poor            Great

Ample parking at Loft Mountain Wayside (restaurant/ gift shop/ gas station) at Mile 79.5 of Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. This is 14.0 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33) and 25.9 miles north of Rockfish Gap (I-64). Walk north on Skyline Drive for 0.1 mile, go right on gated dirt road. In a short distance go right on another dirt road. This ends at a PATC maintenace building with a spring nearby. Continue straight ahead on a foot trail to intersect the AT. Total distance from parking area about 0.5 miles. This is probably the easiest route between the AT and the Loft Mt. Wayside. Coordiinates at the AT intersection are 38.2661 -78.6538. 2/19/2006 20-30
dlcul @ conncoll.edu
The green arrow on the attached map indicates the intersection of the side road with Skyline Drive. Rotate the street view to the east to see this intersection. This side road leading north as well as the road leading from it to Ivy Spring are clearly visible on the satellite view. 011/20/09 1

Frazier Discovery Trail (North Jct.)/Loft Mt. Wayside
  Poor            Great

See previous entry (Mile 5.8) for directions to Loft Mt. Wayside The Frazier Discovery Nature Loop Trail starts across from Loft Mt. Wayside on the access road to Loft Mt. Campground. From the wayside follow the paved path which parallels the road to the campground. The street view to the southeast on the attached map shows this paved path. The start of the Nature Trail is a short distance along this. The Nature Trail is a loop which climbs steeply for about 0.6 miles to a spectacular viewpoint then meets the AT (north junction). Coordinates at this point are 38.2608 -78.6543. Go right on AT for 0.1 mile, then leave AT (south jct.) and descend steeply for approximately 0.6 miles to start. Coordinates at the south junction are 38.2599 -78.6556. Note: Rotate the street view to the southwest to see the Wayside. 11/21/09 20-30 at wayside 1

Trail to Loft Mt. Campground Store

See previous entries for direction to Loft Mountain Wayside. Go east on road to Loft Mt. Campground. Camp store is on left in approximately 1 mile. There is a parking lot on the south side of the store. Follow path on north side of store. Go east across open area then go a few hundred feet (downhill) to meet the AT. Northbound is to left, southbound is to right. 3/19/2006 15-20
dlcul @ conncoll.edu
The marker on the attached map is at the entrance to the campground store parking area. The campground store and the access trail from it to the AT can be seen on the satellite view of the attached map. The store is the large building just east of the marker. 1/12/10 1

Loft Mt. Campground spur 1
  Poor            Great

See previous entry (mile 7.9) for directions to the Loft Mt. Campground Store. Continue on to campground. I have marked the trailhead for this access trail with a green arrow on the attached map. Note that are about 20 parking spaces in the immediate vicinity. I do not know if these are available for anybody or for just for people staying in the campground. Alternatively one could park at the campground store and walk into the campground. I have not checked out this trailhead. The AT makes a loop around the Loft Mt. Campground. This is the more "northern" of two spur trails from the campground to the AT. This one is on the east side of the campground. The spur trail and the AT are visible on the satellite view of the attached map. Coordinates at the intersection are 38.2439 -78.6698. The southbound AT goes right, the northbound goes left. 11/21/09 See directions 1

GPS reading on AT is N38.24384 W78.66988. GPS reading in campground is N38.24499 W78.67009. There is water available in the campground. It is approximately 150 yds from the AT to the campground. 11/03/12

Loft Mt. Campground spur 2
  Poor            Great

See previous entry (Mile 7.9) for directions to Loft Mt. Campground Store. Continue on to campground. On the satellite view of the attached map, there appear to be about 5 parking places at the trailhead. I do not know if these are for anybody or just for those staying in the campground. Alternatively park at the campground store. and walk into the campground. The AT makes a loop around the Loft Mt. Campground. This is the more "southern" of two short spur trails which lead from the campground to the trail. This one leaves from the west side of the campground. See attached map. I have not checked out this trailhead but have marked the probable trailhead with a green arrow. On the satellite view, a trail can be seen going west. If this is not the correct trailhead, it is off by only a short distance. Another source says this trail begins near Tentsite A8. It is about 0.1 miles to the AT. Coordinates there are 38.2484 -78.6736. The southbound AT goes right the northbound goes left. 11/21/09 See directions 1

Trail to Loft Mt. Amphitheater
  Poor            Great

See Previous entry for directions to Loft Mt. Campground Store (mile 7.9). The Campground Amphitheater is a few hundred feet ahead on the right. There is some parking at the amphitheater but probably more at the store. At the amphitheater, the paved campground road bears left. A blue-blazed trail leads straight ahead (south). The green arrow on the attached map marks both the parking and the trailhead for this access trail. The acess trail can clearly be seen on the satellite view heading west from the green arrow. This trail meets the AT in 0.3 miles. At that point the southbound is to right, northbound is to left. Coordinates there are 38.2498 -78.6723. 8-10 at amphitheater 1

Doyles River Trail
  Poor            Great

Parking for the Doyles River Trail is at Mile 81.1 of the Skyline Drive. This point is 15.6 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33) and 24.3 miles north of Rockfish Gap (I-64). Parking area is on the east side of the road which right here is really compass south. Rotate the street view on the attached map to the southeast to see the parking area. The Doyles River Trail goes east (compass south) from the parking area and meets the AT in about 50 feet. Southbound AT is right, northbound is left. 11/21/09 10-15 1

Skyline Drive (Mile 82.2)
  Poor            Great

The AT crosses Skyline Drive at Mile 82.2. This is 12.1 miles south of Swift Run Gap (US 33) and 27.8 miles north of Rockfish Gap (I-64). This point is indicated by the green arow and rotating man on the attached map. If you rotate the street view, you will notice that even roadside parking is quite limited. Probably this is best considered only a drop-off or access point. Much better parking is available at the

Doyles River Overlook 0.4 miles further north. See mile 10.9.
Rotate the street view to the west to see the southbound trail leaving from the right hand side of the road just past the retaining wall. Rotate to the south to see the northbound trail. 01/13/10 0 to very limited 1
