North Adams
  Poor            Great

From Williamstown take MA 2 east to North Adams. The trail crosses MA 2 (Main Street) at Phelps Ave. There is no overnight parking at the trailhead but overnight parking may be available 100 yards east of the AT on MA2 at the Greylock Community Club. Make sure you inquire first. The green arrow on the attached map indicates the parking area at the Community Center. There are several major stores within a short walk of the AT in either direction from the AT crossing. 5/16/06 1
I did day hikes in this region, one time parking at the Stop and Shop lot a couple of blocks west of the intersection of Phelps Avenue and MA 2, the other time parking along Phelps Avenue. Neither of these would be suitable for long-term parking. The latest edition of the AT Guide to MA/CT (11th ed.) suggests overnight parking might be available at the Greylock Community Club 100 yards east of the Trail on MA 2. Inquire first. The markers on the attached map shows the intersection of MA 2 ad Phelps Avenue. This is the southern end of Section 1 and the northern end of Section 2. Rotate the street view to the south to see the southbound AT route down Phelps Ave. Rotate ti the north to see the northbound route. 08/08/08 1

Pattison Road
  Poor            Great

Parking is on the northern side of a major water treatment plant - a Norway spruce plantation is on the southern side. 5/16/06
From downtown head west and turn left (South) onto Notch Rd. Stay on this road for about 1.2 miles, then bear right (West) as it meets with Pattison Rd. Go for about .6 miles to crossing. Parking is on the northern side of the road west of a major water treatment plant - a Norway spruce plantation is on the southern side. I've used this a few times for overnight trips without problems. 08/19/08 2-3 1

A bit more detail about the directions in the previous listing. There is a sign to Mt. Greylock State reservation at the Notch Road/ MA 2 intersection. It appears that after you leave MA 2, North Adams subscribes to the Yankee tradiiton of no street signs at intersections. 08/21/10

Money Brook Trail to Notch Road
  Poor            Great

See directions to the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). From the south continue north on Notch Road for about 3.1 miles to a small parking area on the left. From the north, follow Notch Road south for about 6.4 miles to the parking area, which will be on the right coming from this direction. This parking area is about 0.3 miles south of the Wilbur Clearing lot for the AT (Mile 3.1). The green arrow on the attached map marks the parking area. This may only be approximate as I do not have exact coordinates. The position was estimated from the Mt. Greylock Reservation trail map. Like most of the parking areas on Notch Road, this is day-use only. The utility of this particular access may be limited. The same point on the AT can be reached with a shorter walk from the AT parking aea on Notch Road. (See Mile 3.1). A short spur tail goes west from Notch Road at this point to the Money Brook Trail. According to the 12th edition of the MA-CT AT Guide, a right turn here (north) will lead to the AT in 0.5 miles. I have checked out the trailhead, but have not hiked this route. 11/05/10 3-4 1

A short spur trail goes east from Notch Road to the Old Summit Road Trail. A right turn at this intersection leads to the Bernard Farm Trail which can be followed east to the AT (See Mile 4.2). Total distance approximately 05 0.6 miles. 11/05/10

See directions to the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). From the south continue north on Notch Road for 3.5 miles to a parking area on the right. From the north, follow Notch Road south for about 6 miles to the parking area, which will be on the left coming from this direction. There is no parking at the actual trail crossing (Marker A on the attached map). The parking area mentioned is about 0.1 miles further south (Marker B). The area around the parking lot is apparently known as Wilbur's Clearing. This is a day-use only parking lot. A 0.1-0.2 miles blue-blazed trail leads east then north to meet the AT about 0.1 miles from the road (Mile Marker 3.2). Alternatively one may walk up the road to the trail. A third option is provided a blue-blazed trail on the west side of the road. It parallels the road and reaches the AT just west of the AT crossing of Notch Road. 10/30/10 8-10 1

Bernard Farm Trail west to Notch Road
  Poor            Great

See directions to the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). From the south continue north on Notch Road for about 2.8 miles to a small parking area on the left. From the north, follow Notch Road south for about 6.7 miles to the parking area, which will be on the right coming from this direction. This parking area is about 0.7 miles south of the Wilbur Clearing lot for the AT (Mile 3.1). The green arrow on the attached map marks the parking area. This is a day-use parking lot. Across the road is a sign which says something about a short-cut to the AT. This is actually the blue-blazed Bernard Farms Trail. It goes east for about 0.3 miles to meet the AT in the gap between Mt. Williams and Mt. Fitch. At the intersection the southbound At goes right, while the northbound trail goes left towards Mt. Williams. Coordinates at the AT intersection are 42.6638 -73.1578. (From the AT go west on the blue-blazed trail to the parking area.) 10/31/10 3-4 1

This point can also be accessed from the parking area for the Money Brook Trail on Notch Road. (See Mile 3.0). Any comments about parking safety should be about the area described in the previous listing. 11/05/10

Bernard Farm Trail east to Notch Road
  Poor            Great

From US 2 in North Adams, follow Notch Road south. There is a sign for Mt. Greylock Reservation. There are some twists and turns but stay on Notch Road. About 2.5 miles from US 2, the road takes a sharp right turn. Just beyond this there is a large parking lot on the right. This is very near a gate open in summer, but closed in winter. Thisis the point wher the southbound Notch Road enters Mt. Greylock Reservation. The Bernard Farm Trail goes southwest 3 miles, climbing to meet the AT in the gap between Mt. Williams and Mt. Fitch. It continues another 0.3 miles to Notch Road. (See Mile 4.2 below). While this is a long access, it may be necessary to use when the gate is closed. This parking lot is also one of the few along Notch Road where overnight parking is allowed. I have seen the parking lot, but have not hiked this route or checked out the trailhead. 11/05/10 Ample 1

Notch Road - Robinson Point Trail
  Poor            Great

See directions to the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). From the south continue north on Notch Road for about a mile to a small parking area on the left. From the north, follow Notch Road south for about 8.5 miles to the parking area, which will be on the right coming from this direction. The green arrow on the attached map marks the parking area. There is a cross-walk painted on the road here. I believe the trail sign to the east says 'Shortcut to AT'. This is apparently also a day-use only parking lot. The Robinson Point Trail to the east meets the AT in about 0.1 miles. The northbound AT is left (north) while the southbound is right (south). Coordinates at the AT intersection are 42.6701 -73.1657. To the west of the parking area, the Robinson Point Trail continues 0.3 miles to the view from Robinson Point. 11/01/10 3-4 1

Rockwell Road--North side of Mt Greylock
  Poor            Great

See Mile 6.3 for directions to the summit of Mt. Greylock. The AT crosses Summit Road on the northern side of Mt. Greylock. There is a crosswalk at the crossing. No parking is possible here and no shoulder, so it is not a good access point. The parking lot at the summit is only about 100 yards south on the AT. 11/05/10 None

Mt. Greylock Summit
  Poor            Great

See directions to the intersection of Rockwell Road and Notch Road (Mile 6.8). Northbound on Rockwell Road turn right on what is apparently still Rockwell Road. Southbound on Notch Road, turn left. The road circles around the summit cone. At a traffic circle, bear left to parking. Bascom Lodge is to the right while the War Memorial Tower is straight ahead. There are many parking places available but on a busy day, there might be problem finding one. A fee (currently two dollars) is charged for parking. I don't know if this is just during the summer or whenever the road to the summit is open. Overnight parking is allowed here. The AT is actually accessible here from about Mile 6.1 - Mile 6.4. Southbound the trail climbs the north side of the summit cone, reaching the parking lot near where the old ski building for the Thunderbolt Ski Trail is located. It loops around the summit, passing the tower and then crossing the traffic circle mentioned above. It then begins the descent down the side side of the mountain towards the intersection of Rockwell and Notch Roads. 11/06/10 Many 1

Here Rockwell goes right towards the summit while Notch Road continues straight ahead.
From north: From US 2 in North Adams, follow Notch Road south. There is a sign for Mt. Greylock Reservation. There are some twists and turns but stay on Notch Road. It is about 8 miles to the intersection with Rockwell Road.

Somewhere the road becomes Rockwell Road. About 8 miles from US 7, there are two fairly closely spaced hairpin turns. There is a parking area on the right at the second. From the north, this point is 0.5 miles south of the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (See Mile 6.8).

Follow US 7 north through Pittsfield to Lanesborough. Bear right on North Main Street whre there is a sign for Mt. Greylock Reservation. Follow subsequent signs for Mt. Greylock. Somewhere the road becomes Rockwell Road. It is about 5.5 miles to the trail head for the Jones Nose Trail and the Old Adams Road. There is a parking lot on the right. From the other direction the parking lot is about 3 miles south of the intersection of Notch Road and Rockwell Road (Mile 6.8). This parking area is day-use only. The Jones Nose Trail is a one mile long blue-blazed trail which goes northeast, climbing fairly steeply to meet the AT at the southern end of the summit of Saddle Ball Mountain. The trail head for Old Adams Road is the same as for the Jones Nose Trail. See Mile 9.0 The Old Adams Road goes east over relatively level terrain. In 2 miles it intersects the AT. Here the northbound AT goes left, while the southbound goes right. The Google map seems to suggest this road is open to vehicle traffic. it is not. Coordinates at the AT intersection are: 42.5984 -73.1777. 11/06/10 10-15

MA 8 - Cheshire
  Poor            Great

MA 8 runs from Cheshire to Adams. There is no parking at the trailhead but parking is available at the closed AT hostel at St. Marys Catholic Church in Cheshire. Ask permission first. A convenience store is.2 mile south on MA 8. Groceries, lodging, restaurants, a post office and other services are also available in Cheshire. An outfitter is located along the road to Adams - several miles north of the AT. Bus service is also available. 5/16/06
The AT crosses MA 8 in Cheshire 0.5 miles north of the intersection with Church St. and Mountain Road. This is the official southern end of Section 2 and the northern end of Section 3. As can be seen by rotating the street view on the attached map, there is no parking available here. Parking is apparently still allowed with permission at the church mentioned above (see Parking Safety comments). Parking is also now available at the Asuwillticook Rail Trail. (See Mile 0.6 of Section 3.) Rotate the street view to see the northbound trail. It leaves from the left side of the road just to the right of the dumpster. The southbound trail is less clearly visible, but can be seen by rotating the view to the south. As I recall it goes through the strip of trees next to the fence in the view. From there it crosses a field. towards School St. 11/08/10 0 at crossing but see Directions 1
