MA 8.9
  Poor            Great

Throughout most of Dalton, MA 8 and MA 9 follow a combined route. The point where they split and MA 9 goes north along North St. is the official north terminus of Section 4 and south terminus of Section 3 There is no parking here. There is a hiker parking lot on Gulf Road (See Mile 8.3 of Section 3). Day parking might be possible along Dalton streets. From the intersection the northbound trail to Section 3 goes northwest along a short abandoned section of road, then follows High St which becomes Gulf Road. Rotate the street view on the attached map to the northwest to see this route. The southbound trail to Section 4 goes east along MA 8, soon crossing the Housatonic River. Rotate the street view to the east to see this route. 08/13/11 0 here 1

Chamberlain Park (Ballfields)
  Poor            Great

From the intersection of MA 8 and MA 9 (See Mile 0.0) go east on MA 8. In 0.2 miles, immediately after crossing the Housatonic River go right on Depot ST. (This is the route followed by the AT). Take the first left onto Chamberlain Ave and go about 2 blocks to the parking area for some ball fields (Chamberlain Park). The green arrow indicates the parking area. I parked here twice for day hikes. I no signs about parking regulations, but overnight parking might be frowned upon. Walk back to Depot Street to continue on the AT. Northbound is right, southbound is left. 08/13/11 20 or more 1

From the south: See Mile 4.0 for directions to the junction of MA 8 and McNerney Road in Becket. Follow McNerney Road northwest. The name changes to Washington Monument road. The trail crossing is 6.4 miles from MA 8.

From the north: The directions from US 7 in Pitsfield are too complex to reproduce here. Use the Get Directions option on the attached map.
