White River
   Poor           Great

The official northern end of the section is at the intersection of VT 14 and Quechee-West Hartford Road in West Hartford. The latter road crosses a bridge over the the White River just west of the intersection. VT 14 is not directly accessible from I-91 or I-89. I have approached it via Exit 12 off I-91, which I believe is the first exit north of the intersection of I-91 and I-89. Go right (east) from the exit to US 5. Go right (south) on US 5 to the intersection with VT 14. Go right once again on VT 14. West Hartford is 7 miles from this point. Parking along VT 14 is problematic, even for short term. Best parking is at the intersection of Tigertown and Podunk Roads (See Mile 8.7 of VT Sec. 1). There are parking pulloffs for a total of 2-3 cars there. From the intersection of VT 14 and Quechee-West Hartford Road, the northbound AT (to section 1) goes north on VT 14. The north view on the street view on the attached map shows the route up VT 14. In 0.3 miles, the trail turns right on Tigertown Road in 0.3-0.4 The southbound AT (to Section 2) goes west on Quechee-West Hartford Road, crossing the bridge. See southwest view. Parking along Quechee-West Hartford road is probably even more iffy than along VT 14. 12/18/20 See directions and comments

Joe Ranger Road

See the directions to the trail crossing for Woodstock Road (Mile 11.1). Follow these as far as the Y at Teagos General Store in downtown South Pomfret. Take the right fork which is Pomfret-South Pomfret Road (AKA County Road). Go about 5.7 miles (all distances estimated from Maptech software) to just south of the community of North Pomfret. Go right on gravel Bunker Hill Road. There is a large white church on the left just north of the intersection. In another 1.2 miles there is a potentially confusing junction. Go left here, staying on Bunker Hill Road. There are no signs. The intersection with Joe Ranger Road is about 0.9 miles further just past a cemetery. Joe Ranger Road is on the right. There is limited roadside parking available. The best is just a short distance south of the intersection on the right side of Joe Ranger Road. I pulled onto the grass to get off the road . From West Hartford, cross the White River on the Quechee-West Hartford Road and immediately go right on River Road. The paved road eventually bears to the left (west) and becomes Pomfret Road. From the bridge it is 4.1 miles to North Pomfret and the intersection with Bunker Hill Road (distances estimated from Maptech software). Go left onto Bunker Hill Road and proceed as above. From the intersection of Bunker Hill Road and Joe Ranger Road, walk south along the latter for about 0.2 miles, passing a small pond on the east side of the road. The northbound AT goes to the left (east), the southbound AT goes to the right (west). The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the trail crossing. 12/18/20 2-3

See the directions to the trail crossing for Woodstock Stage Road (Mile 11.1). Follow these as far as the intersection of VT 12 and Pomfret Road. Go straight ahead (north) on Pomfret Road. In 1.3 miles go right on Barber Hill Road. This intersection is about 0.8 miles south of the Y at Teagos General Store. In 1.4 miles, at a T intersection, go left (north) on gravel Cloudland Road. The trail crossing is 1.8 miles further. Parking is very limited. There are wide spots on the side of road which would allow parking for 1-2 cars. The southbound AT goes left (west) at this crossing. The northbound AT comes in from the west, turns right (south) following the road for 200 feet, then goes left(east) and enters a field. The marker indicates the approximate location of the trail crossing. 12/18/20 Very limited roadside parking

The crossing is 12.2 miles south of VT 107 in Bethany. The AT crosses VT 12, 4.4 miles north of Woodstock. There is an AT parking lot just north of the AT crossing. It is not easily visible from the highway, particularly northbound. The lot is on the west side, Look for a break in the guard rails. A short but steep driveway descends to the parking lot. The marker on the satellite view of the attached map indicated the parking lot. From the lot the northbound trail (to Section 2) goes south then bears east and crosses the road. The southbound trail goes west, crossing a footbridge. Parking Area has room. Entrance/Exit can be dicey if another vehicle arrives at the same time. Busy road does not make it easy. Overgrown trail by kiosk leads to wooden step over the guardrail headed north. Go slow, lot is down a bit and difficult to see from road. Take extra caution crossing road. Farmstand nearby in season. 12/18/20 5-6

approx 1 1/2 miles north of AT parking on rt 12. According to the business just north of the lot, the AT lot is never plowed in the winter and it is lower than the grade of the rt 12, so you would probably need a monster truck reliably get in an out of the lot if there is much snow accumulation. There is a pull off about 1 1/2 miles north of the crossing though that is plowed at least sometimes and if it's not, at least it's at grade, so that one could dig themselves out and get back on the road. The number of vehicles at the alternate lot depends on how people park and how plowed it is--it's just a guess. 12/30/16 3-15
